Disclosed is a method for achieving highly accurate transmission power control of a power amplifier when switching the power amplifier between the compressed mode and the uncompressed mode. The method comprises: when switching from a first mode to a second mode, determining, as a comparison reference value error, the output power error in the first mode relative to the power setting value for the first mode (Step ST32); setting the power setting value for the second mode so as to cancel out the output power error between the two modes (Step ST33); determining the output power error in the second mode relative to the power setting value for the second mode (Step ST35); determining the gain linearity value on the basis of the power setting value for the second mode and the output power error in the second mode (Step ST36); and, on the basis of the gain linearity value, resetting the power setting value for the second mode so as to cancel out the comparison reference value error in the first mode and the output power error in the second mode (Steps ST37, 38).

The invention provides a power amplification device and method based on polarization modulation. The device comprises a coordinate conversion module, a phase modulation module, an amplitude modulationmodule, a decoding module, and a power amplification module, wherein the coordinate conversion module converts an input signal represented by orthogonal vectors into an amplitude signal and a phase signal represented by polar coordinates; the phase modulation module periodically and alternately outputs a first phase modulation signal and a second phase modulation signal, and outputs an amplitudecompensation factor; the amplitude modulation module acquires an amplitude modulation signal; the decoding module acquires an amplitude decoding value; and the power amplification module determines anamplification time for the first phase modulation signal or the second phase modulation signal, so that a power amplification signal is acquired. According to a transmission power control signal including information on a transmission power change amount ΔP, it is possible to decide whether to perform mode switching between a compressed mode and a non-compressed mode by referencing an output power level of a power amplifier (103) or to perform mode switching between the compressed mode and the non-compressed mode without referencing the output power level of the power amplifier (103). Thus, it is possible to operate a measurement unit such as a detection circuit (106), an LPF (108), and an ADC (109) only when substantially required. Accordingly, it is possible to suppress thefluctuation (output power discontinuity) of the transmission power attributed to mode switching with a low power consumption.

A transmission apparatus has two modes of power amplifier operation, in which mode 1 is inherently accurate, mode 2 is inherently less accurate, and measurement of a power amplifier output from mode 1 is used to correct a power amplifier output in mode 2 . Mode 1 may be a compressed mode and mode 2 may be a non-compressed mode. The apparatus may include a power controller that provides overlapping scaling factor sets for modes 1 and 2 and controls transmission power using the scaling factor sets. Upon a mode transition, the controller uses the overlapping scaling factors and changes the scaling factor set for the mode of a destination of the transition based on actual measurement representative of transmission power, for example, by carrying out power alignment loop operations. A cellular mobile device may include such transmission apparatus. A polar modulation transmitter is also disclosed.
