Retrospective Study of 338 Canine Oral Melanomas with Clinical, Histologic, and Immunohistochemical Review of 129 Cases
José A. Ramos-Vara,Marilyn E. Beissenherz,Margaret A. Miller,Gayle C. Johnson,Lanny W. Pace,A. Fard,S. J. Kottler +6 more
TL;DR: Diagnostic records from 338 canine oral melanomas in 338 dogs received at the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory were reviewed and Melan A is a specific and sensitive marker for canine melanomas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome-wide association analysis reveals a SOD1 mutation in canine degenerative myelopathy that resembles amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
Tomoyuki Awano,Gary S. Johnson,Claire M. Wade,Martin L. Katz,Gayle C. Johnson,Jeremy F. Taylor,Michele Perloski,Tara Biagi,Izabella Baranowska,Sam Long,Philip A. March,Natasha J. Olby,G. Diane Shelton,Shahnawaz Khan,Dennis P. O'Brien,Kerstin Lindblad-Toh,Joan R. Coates +16 more
TL;DR: These findings identify canine DM to be the first recognized spontaneously occurring animal model for ALS.
Journal ArticleDOI
AAV gene transfer delays disease onset in a TPP1-deficient canine model of the late infantile form of Batten disease
Martin L. Katz,Luis Tecedor,Chen Yonghong,Baye G. Williamson,Elena S. Lysenko,Fred A. Wininger,Whitney M. Young,Gayle C. Johnson,Rebecca E.H. Whiting,Joan R. Coates,Beverly L. Davidson,Beverly L. Davidson +11 more
TL;DR: Using a dog model of a lysosomal storage disease, it is shown that this strategy delayed disease onset, extended life span, and protected dogs from early cognitive decline, suggesting that this approach could improve the lives of children suffering from the same or similar diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
A frame shift mutation in canine TPP1 (the ortholog of human CLN2) in a juvenile Dachshund with neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.
Tomoyuki Awano,Martin L. Katz,Dennis P. O'Brien,Istvan Sohar,Peter Lobel,Joan R. Coates,Shahnawaz Khan,Gayle C. Johnson,Urs Giger,Gary S. Johnson +9 more
TL;DR: This Dachshund NCL may prove to be a useful model for studying the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration in human late infantile NCL and for evaluating novel therapeutic interventions for this disease.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phylogenetic Characterization of Canine Distemper Viruses Detected in Naturally Infected Dogs in North America
TL;DR: Phylogenetic analysis strongly suggested an evolutionary relationship between sequences detected in these two cases and those of phocine distemper virus 2 and two other strains of CDV not previously detected in the continental United States.
