An assembly, such as an aircraft component, is formed with a weld joint by, for example, using friction stir welding, FSW, to form a lap joint between a stiffer and the interior surface of the skin of the component. A sealant layer, such as a monomer sealant/adhesive is applied to the surfaces to be joined, and is cured in place by the elevated temperatures of the welding process to form an elastomeric fay surface sealing, such as a fluoroelastomeric coating, to protect the component from corrosion at the welds. Additional heat for curing may be applied by laser or induction heating or the like.

Welded joints with polymer sealant

A method for weldbonding at least two work-pieces together includes applying an adhesive to a first surface of a first work-piece, and bringing the first surface of the first work-piece into contact with a surface of a second work-piece. The first work-piece and second work-piece are then friction stir or friction stir spot welded together, and the adhesive is cured. The use of bonding tools to maintain the two work-pieces together during curing of the adhesive is eliminated.

Method for joining at least two adjoining work-pieces by friction stir and/or friction stir spot welding

Method of welding, by using for example friction stir welding, surfaces with polymers sealant and welded structure

The invention concerns a composite material in band or slab form made of two cover plates ( 1, 2 ), made of steel, which can be resistance welded together via electrically conductive bodies ( 4 ), and an intermediate layer ( 3 ) made of a filler material in which the bodies ( 4 ) are embedded, with the bodies ( 4 ), which are implemented as curved slugs, lying pressed flat between the cover plates ( 1, 2 ). This type of composite material is produced in that the filler material ( 3 ′) for the intermediate layer ( 3 ) is applied as a paste to a band ( 1 ′) serving as the first cover plate ( 1 ) as it passes by and the curved slugs ( 4 ′) are, after being laid on the filler material ( 3 ′), pressed into it at least until contact is made via a band ( 2 ′) supplied as the second cover plate ( 2 ) in a welding gap ( 8 ) formed by two roller electrodes ( 6,7 ) of a resistance welding device and the slugs are largely pressed flat with the bands ( 1′, 2 ′) during welding.

A metal-reinforced layered composite includes at least one intermediate metal layer. The intermediate metal layer includes at least two at least partially overlapping metal foils which are joined to one another in an overlap region by at least one weld seam. There are no leakage channels and/or no continuous leakage channels at the weld seam of the metal foils in the longitudinal extent of the overlap region. At least one of the weld seams may have a course which at least at one point has a direction component at right angles to the longitudinal extent of the overlap region of the metal foils. The intermediate metal layer may be provided with at least one passage in the overlap region of the metal foils. A gasket, a gasket sheet, a metal layer and a method of manufacturing a layered composite are also provided.

Method of producing a corrosion-resistant joint between metallic structural elements by spot welding, the method being characterised by the steps: - pretreatment of the joining surfaces (4', 5') for - the spot-welding operation, and - the adhesive application of anti-corrosive layers (8), as well as - degreasing, - rinsing - pickling, - application of a layer (8) of sealing compound at least on one side to the joining surfaces (4, 5) of one of the structural elements (4, 5), - tacking of the structural elements (4, 5), - spot-welding operation with - setting of a defined electrode pressure for obtaining metallically bright joining-surface sections in the area of the electrode pressure point (10), - current supply for producing the weld spot (11), and - hardening of the sealing compound (8).
