Understanding the correlation between magnetic properties and nanostructure involves collaborative efforts between chemists, physicists, and materials scientists to study both fundamental properties and potential applications. This article introduces a classification of nanostructure morphology according to the mechanism responsible for the magnetic properties. The fundamental magnetic properties of interest and the theoretical frameworks developed to model these properties are summarized. Common chemical and physical techniques for the fabrication of magnetic nanostructures are surveyed, followed by some examples of recent investigations of magnetic systems with structure on the nanometer scale. The article concludes with a brief discussion of some promising experimental techniques in synthesis and measurements.

Aerosol Processing of Materials

It is essential to put individual, free-standing nanowires onto insulating substrates and integrate them to useful devices. Here we report a strategy for fabrication of conducting polymer nanowires on thermally oxidized Si surfaces by use of DNA as templates. The direct use of stretched and immobilized DNA strands as templates avoids the agglomeration of DNA caused by shielding of charges on DNA when polyaniline/DNA complexes formed in solution. Most importantly, the oriented DNA strands immobilized on the Si surface predetermine the position and the orientation of the nanowires. The approach described here is the first step toward uniting the programmable-assembly ability of DNA with the unique electronic properties of conducting polymers for high-density functional nanodevices. The conductivity of the nanowires is very sensitive to the proton doping-undoping process, suggesting that the nanowires hold great promise for sensitive chemical sensor applications.

Polyaniline nanowires on Si surfaces fabricated with DNA templates.

The reduction of CoClz(aq) with NaBH4 yields ultrafine particles of CozB as the primary product if the two reagents are rapidly mixed and the product is handled under argon. However, the CozB is converted to Co(s) particles plus boron oxides if exposed to oxygen (sacrificial reaction where boron is oxidized while cobalt is reduced). Still a third product, Co(BOz)z, can be formed if time is allowed for the Co2+/CozB catalysis of the aqueous BH4BOz-(aq) oxidation to occur before the major part of the CoClz(aq) is added. The Co(B02)~ is converted to Co3(B0& and small amounts of Co on heat processing at 500 "C.
