Abstract: In addition to the primary damage they do, earthquakes can cause tsunamis, massive ocean swells that can inundate coastal regions. In their Perspective, Synolakis et al. describe results presented at a workshop on the interface between seismology and tsunami hydrodynamics held in Santa Monica in May 1997. The authors discuss the highlights of the meeting and summarize future directions for research.
