TL;DR: Polarization measurements of Jupiter, Saturn, and Saturn's rings from 1 to 3.5 μm are presented in this paper, showing that the radially directed limb polarizations observed in the visible undergo a surprising 90° rotation to a tangential direction, particularly on the poles.

Abstract: The basic rationale for studying galactic nuclei, including our own, is to search for phenomena fundamentally different from those we can study nearby. In some cases, such as Seyfert galaxies, such processes are clearly occuring, but we are frustrated by the lack of detail that we can see in what is spatially an unresolved point. The Galactic Center would probably not hold our attention for long if we observed it from beyond the Local Group, but its proximity allows study on a scale completely unattainable for any other galactic nucleus. Thus, in the study of galaxies, it holds a unique place analogous to that of the sun in stellar astronomy.
