Wood Quality and its Biological Basis
TL;DR: In this paper, the mechanical properties of wood were investigated for pulp and paper processing, and the relationship between wood chemistry and quality in relation to quality and density and growth of wood.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sustainable building solutions: a review of lessons from the natural world
TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the biomimetics literature that is relevant to building materials and design and analyse specific examples of sustainability from nature and the benefits or value that these solutions have brought to different creatures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanical properties of primary plant cell wall analogues
TL;DR: Structural models were proposed to explain the role of each polysaccharide in determining the mechanical properties of these plant primary cell wall analogues, and led to very compliant materials characterised by time-dependent creep behaviour.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanical effects of plant cell wall enzymes on cellulose/xyloglucan composites
Elisabeth Chanliaud,Jacquie De Silva,Barbara H. Strongitharm,George Jeronimidis,Michael J. Gidley +4 more
TL;DR: Direct in vitro evidence is provided for the involvement of cell wall xyloglucan-specific enzymes in mechanical changes underlying plant cell wall re-modelling and growth processes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Heat transfer through penguin feathers
TL;DR: It is shown that convection does not occur in the coat of the penguin and that radiative heat loss is minimized, and the theory predicts a thermal conductivity that compares well with an empirically measured value.
