Objectification Theory: Toward Understanding Women's Lived Experiences and Mental Health Risks:

In this innovative book, a well-known feminist and sociologist-who is also the founding editor of Gender & Society-challenges our most basic assumptions about gender. Judith Lorber argues that gender is wholly a product of socialization, subject to human agency, organization, and interpretation, and that it is a social institution comparable to the economy, the family, and religion in its significance and consequences. Calling into question the inevitability and necessity of gender, she envisions a society structured for equality, where no gender, racial ethnic, or social class group is allowed to monopolize positions of power.

Paradoxes of gender

Research articles on women's entrepreneurship reveal, in spite of intentions to the contrary and in spite of inconclusive research results, a tendency to recreate the idea of women as being secondary to men and of women's businesses being of less significance or, at best, as being a complement. Based on a discourse analysis, this article discusses what research practices cause these results. It suggests new research directions that do not reproduce women's subordination but capture more and richer aspects of women's entrepreneurship.

Why does housework remain "women's work"? Some scholars argue that economic dependency comples wives to exchange unpaid labor for a share of the husband's income. Others claim that wives perform housework-and husbands avoid it-to enact symbolically their femininity or masculinity. This article examines both perspectives and finds that among wives the link between housework and the transfer of earnings in marriage complies with rules of economic exchange. However, the more a husband relies on his wife for economic support, the less housework he does. It appears that by doing less housework, economically dependent husbands also "dogender."

Economic Dependency, Gender, and the Division of Labor at Home

Objectification theory (B. L. Fredrickson & T. Roberts, 1997) posits that American culture socializes women to adopt observers' perspectives on their physical selves. This self-objectification is hypothesized to (a) produce body shame, which in turn leads to restrained eating, and (b) consume attentional resources, which is manifested in diminished mental performance. Two experiments manipulated self-objectification by having participants try on a swimsuit or a sweater. Experiment 1 tested 72 women and found that self-objectification increased body shame, which in turn predicted restrained eating. Experiment 2 tested 42 women and 40 men and found that these effects on body shame and restrained eating replicated for women only. Additionally, self-objectification diminished math performance for women only. Discussion centers on the causes and consequences of objectifying women's bodies.

Patterns of mating and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) inheritance were investigated for the Basidiomycete, Coprinus cinereus in order to better understand the relationship of reproductive biology and mtDNA evolution in fungi. Results showed that the unique mating system of basidiomycetes can lead to the formation of mitochondrial mosaics (i.e., colonies composed of sectors differing in mtDNA). Mitochondria do not migrate along with nuclei during mating. Intracellular mixed or recombinant mtDNA molecules were not observed. Interestingly, it was found that mating asymmetry, caused by nonreciprocal nuclear migration, may be an important part of the reproductive biology of C. cinereus.

Patterns of Mating and Mitochondrial DNA Inheritance in the Agaric Basidiomycete Coprinus cinereus

An Iridaea cordata (Turner) Bory population made up of 83% gametophytes and 17% tetrasporophytes demonstrated little variation in these proportions over three years. These data contrast with an expectation that alternations of generations, as demonstrated by culture studies, should result in equal numbers of isomorphic generations. Analyses of reproductive and demographic attributes of the population were made to better understand the role of alternation of generations in this population.



Growth and mortality rates in the summer could not account for the success of gametophytes. however, size class frequencies demonstrated that tetrasporophytes were smaller individuals. Sporelings recruited into this intertidal region and made up 20% of the spring population numbers. Even with this level of recruitment, gametophyte-to-tetrasporophyte ratios did not change. Perennating holdfasts regenerated 80% of the spring number and 90% of the total blade area. Consequently, perennation and differential survival of gametophyte spores or sporelings are proposed as mechanisms maintaining gatnetophyte dominance in this San Juan Island, Washington population.

Life history variations in a predominantly gametophytic population ov iridaea cordata (gigartinaceae, rhodophyta)1

We studied mitochondrial DNA variability in 19 natural Neurospora crassa isolates and one wild-type isolate to examine evolution of these fungi and their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). We combined restriction endonuclease analysis of natural isolate mtDNA with DNA-DNA hybridization to cloned EcoR I fragments of a wild-type genome to discriminate between length mutations and site changes due to nucleotide substitution. Most variability was due to length mutations (insertions and deletions); genome size could vary 25% between pairs of isolates. Length-mutation distribution was not random, nor simply explained by the presence of coding versus noncoding regions. Restriction-site changes were few; the estimated amount of nucleotide substitution per nucleotide between the most divergent pair of isolates was 0.78%. Evolutionary relationships among isolates based on both types of mutations were compatible, and suggest that geographically distinct populations of mitochondrial DNA exist in the biological species, N. crassa. In contrast, no such correlation was shown by the previously determined distribution of nuclear heterokaryon incompatibility genes in the same isolates (Mylyk, 1975, 1976).

Evolution and mitochondrial dna in neurospora crassa.

IN the ascomycete fungus Neurospora, the distribution of homologous mitochondrial plasmid DNAs in different species1 and among mitochondrial types2 of N. crassa suggests that these molecules have moved between lineages of clonally propagated mtDNA. Here we report direct evidence for independent inheritance of mitochondrial plasmids by sexual reproduction which may help explain the distribution of these molecules among mitochondrial lineages.
