Journal ArticleDOI
Xenohormetic and anti-aging activity of secoiridoid polyphenols present in extra virgin olive oil: a new family of gerosuppressant agents.
Javier A. Menendez,Jorge Joven,Gerard Aragonès,Enrique Barrajón-Catalán,Raúl Beltrán-Debón,Isabel Borrás-Linares,Jordi Camps,Bruna Corominas-Faja,Sílvia Cufí,Salvador Fernández-Arroyo,Anabel García-Heredia,Anna Hernández-Aguilera,María Herranz-López,Cecilia Jiménez-Sánchez,Eugeni López-Bonet,Jesús Lozano-Sánchez,Fedra Luciano-Mateo,Begoña Martin-Castillo,Vicente Martín-Paredero,Almudena Pérez-Sánchez,Cristina Oliveras-Ferraros,Marta Riera-Borrull,Esther Rodríguez-Gallego,Rosa Quirantes-Piné,Anna Rull,Laura Tomás-Menor,Alejandro Vazquez-Martin,Carlos Alonso-Villaverde,Vicente Micol,Antonio Segura-Carretero +29 more
TL;DR: EVOO secoiridoids constitute a new family of plant-produced gerosuppressant agents that molecularly “repair” the aimless (and harmful) AMPK/mTOR-driven quasi-program that leads to aging and aging-related diseases, including cancer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plant-derived polyphenols regulate expression of miRNA paralogs miR-103/107 and miR-122 and prevent diet-induced fatty liver disease in hyperlipidemic mice
Jorge Joven,Eugenia Espinel,Anna Rull,Gerard Aragonès,Esther Rodríguez-Gallego,Jordi Camps,Vicente Micol,María Herranz-López,Javier A. Menendez,Isabel Borrás,Antonio Segura-Carretero,Carlos Alonso-Villaverde,Raúl Beltrán-Debón +12 more
TL;DR: The data indicate that plant-derived polyphenols should be tested in humans as preventive rather than therapeutic agents in the regulation of hepatic fatty acid utilization.
Journal ArticleDOI
Proanthocyanidins in health and disease
Cinta Bladé,Gerard Aragonès,Anna Arola-Arnal,Begoña Muguerza,Francisca Isabel Bravo,M. Josepa Salvadó,Lluís Arola,Manuel Suárez +7 more
TL;DR: Biochemical and epigenetic mechanisms, including the modulation of microRNAs, allow PAs to modulate cell functionality and PA effects in metabolic diseases are reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Continuous administration of polyphenols from aqueous rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) extract ameliorates dietary-induced metabolic disturbances in hyperlipidemic mice.
Raúl Beltrán-Debón,Anna Rull,Fernando Rodríguez-Sanabria,Ihsan Iswaldi,María Herranz-López,Gerard Aragonès,Jordi Camps,Carlos Alonso-Villaverde,Javier A. Menendez,Vicente Micol,Antonio Segura-Carretero,Jorge Joven +11 more
TL;DR: Data is presented indicating that the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and the resulting regulation of cellular energy homeostasis may play a significant role in these effects of rooibos extract, suggesting that adding polyphenols to the daily diet is likely to help in the overall management of metabolic diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nonconcordance between subclinical atherosclerosis and the calculated Framingham risk score in HIV-infected patients: relationships with serum markers of oxidation and inflammation.
Sandra Parra,Blai Coll,Gerard Aragonès,Judit Marsillach,Raúl Beltrán,Anna Rull,Jorge Joven,Carlos Alonso-Villaverde,Jordi Camps +8 more
TL;DR: Evaluated the agreement between the CVD risk estimated using the Framingham risk score (FRS) and the observed presence of subclinical atherosclerosis in HIV‐infected patients and investigated the relationships between CVD and plasma biomarkers of oxidation and inflammation.
