We describe latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), a generative probabilistic model for collections of discrete data such as text corpora. LDA is a three-level hierarchical Bayesian model, in which each item of a collection is modeled as a finite mixture over an underlying set of topics. Each topic is, in turn, modeled as an infinite mixture over an underlying set of topic probabilities. In the context of text modeling, the topic probabilities provide an explicit representation of a document. We present efficient approximate inference techniques based on variational methods and an EM algorithm for empirical Bayes parameter estimation. We report results in document modeling, text classification, and collaborative filtering, comparing to a mixture of unigrams model and the probabilistic LSI model.

Latent dirichlet allocation

We propose a generative model for text and other collections of discrete data that generalizes or improves on several previous models including naive Bayes/unigram, mixture of unigrams [6], and Hof-mann's aspect model, also known as probabilistic latent semantic indexing (pLSI) [3]. In the context of text modeling, our model posits that each document is generated as a mixture of topics, where the continuous-valued mixture proportions are distributed as a latent Dirichlet random variable. Inference and learning are carried out efficiently via variational algorithms. We present empirical results on applications of this model to problems in text modeling, collaborative filtering, and text classification.

Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques

The Pascal Visual Object Classes (VOC) challenge is a benchmark in visual object category recognition and detection, providing the vision and machine learning communities with a standard dataset of images and annotation, and standard evaluation procedures. Organised annually from 2005 to present, the challenge and its associated dataset has become accepted as the benchmark for object detection.

This paper describes the dataset and evaluation procedure. We review the state-of-the-art in evaluated methods for both classification and detection, analyse whether the methods are statistically different, what they are learning from the images (e.g. the object or its context), and what the methods find easy or confuse. The paper concludes with lessons learnt in the three year history of the challenge, and proposes directions for future improvement and extension.

The Pascal Visual Object Classes (VOC) Challenge

Clustering is the unsupervised classification of patterns (observations, data items, or feature vectors) into groups (clusters). The clustering problem has been addressed in many contexts and by researchers in many disciplines; this reflects its broad appeal and usefulness as one of the steps in exploratory data analysis. However, clustering is a difficult problem combinatorially, and differences in assumptions and contexts in different communities has made the transfer of useful generic concepts and methodologies slow to occur. This paper presents an overview of pattern clustering methods from a statistical pattern recognition perspective, with a goal of providing useful advice and references to fundamental concepts accessible to the broad community of clustering practitioners. We present a taxonomy of clustering techniques, and identify cross-cutting themes and recent advances. We also describe some important applications of clustering algorithms such as image segmentation, object recognition, and information retrieval.

Data clustering: a review

GRANT is an expert system for finding sources of funding given research proposals. Its search method - constrained spreading activation - makes inferences about the goals of the user and thus finds information that the user did not explicitly request but that is likely to be useful. The architecture of GRANT and the implementation of constrained spreading activation are described, and GRANT's performance is evaluated.

Buck's prime number coding scheme

A number of automatic theories have been proposed over the last few years leading to the assignment of significance values to linguistic entities in accordance with their importance for purposes of content representation. Among these are methodologies based on decision theory, information theory, communication theory, vector space transformation and others. An attempt is made to compare these theories by exhibiting the formal frequency characteristics which underlie them. The effectiveness of the various approaches is also evaluated in experimental situations by using collections of documents in the areas of aerodynamics, medicine and world affairs.

A Comparison of Term Value Measurements for Automatic Indexing

The capabilities of automatic text search systems are reviewed and evaluation results are cited comparing the performance of automatic text searching systems with the effectiveness of manual controlled-term indexing methods. Some possibilities arethen examined for improving automatic text search systems, including the use of complex content identifiers instead of single words, and the introduction of user-system interaction. A likely scenario is given for the operations of future automatic text search systems.
