I have developed "tennis elbow" from lugging this book around the past four weeks, but it is worth the pain, the effort, and the aspirin. It is also worth the (relatively speaking) bargain price. Including appendixes, this book contains 894 pages of text. The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Principles of Neural Science

Neuromotor prostheses (NMPs) aim to replace or restore lost motor functions in paralysed humans by routeing movement-related signals from the brain, around damaged parts of the nervous system, to external effectors. To translate preclinical results from intact animals to a clinically useful NMP, movement signals must persist in cortex after spinal cord injury and be engaged by movement intent when sensory inputs and limb movement are long absent. Furthermore, NMPs would require that intention-driven neuronal activity be converted into a control signal that enables useful tasks. Here we show initial results for a tetraplegic human (MN) using a pilot NMP. Neuronal ensemble activity recorded through a 96-microelectrode array implanted in primary motor cortex demonstrated that intended hand motion modulates cortical spiking patterns three years after spinal cord injury. Decoders were created, providing a ‘neural cursor’ with which MN opened simulated e-mail and operated devices such as a television, even while conversing. Furthermore, MN used neural control to open and close a prosthetic hand, and perform rudimentary actions with a multi-jointed robotic arm. These early results suggest that NMPs based upon intracortical neuronal ensemble spiking activity could provide a valuable new neurotechnology to restore independence for humans with paralysis. The cover shows Matt Nagle, first participant in the BrainGate pilot clinical trial. He is unable to move his arms or legs following cervical spinal cord injury. Researchers at the Department of Neuroscience at Brown University, working with biotech company Cyberkinetics and 3 other institutions, demonstrate that movement-related signals can be relayed from the brain via an implanted BrainGate chip, allowing the patient to drive a computer screen cursor and activate simple robotic devices. Such neuromotor prostheses could pave the way towards systems to replace or restore lost motor function in paralysed humans. Prior to this advance, this type of work has been performed chiefly in monkeys. The latest example of such research has achieved a large increase in speed over current devices, enhancing the prospects for clinically viable brain-machine interfaces.

Neuronal ensemble control of prosthetic devices by a human with tetraplegia

Over the past 20 years, neuroimaging has become a predominant technique in systems neuroscience. One might envisage that over the next 20 years the neuroimaging of distributed processing and connectivity will play a major role in disclosing the brain's functional architecture and operational principles. The inception of this journal has been foreshadowed by an ever-increasing number of publications on functional connectivity, causal modeling, connectomics, and multivariate analyses of distributed patterns of brain responses. I accepted the invitation to write this review with great pleasure and hope to celebrate and critique the achievements to date, while addressing the challenges ahead.

Functional and effective connectivity: a review.

In a case study with a person with high cervical spinal cord injury, we show a first proof-of-concept on how to detect and classify different movement attempts of the same upper limb. The lesion was complete (AIS A) at level C4 and no hand function was preserved. We detected in a self-paced online setup hand open and palmar grasp with an accuracy of 68.4 % (chance level 50%).

Seit einigen Jahren ist in der nordamerikanischen Information-SystemsDisziplin (IS) eine verstärkte Anwendung neurowissenschaftlicher Ansätze zu beobachten. Theorien und Methoden der Neurowissenschaften tragen zu einem besseren Verständnis menschlichen Verhaltens bei. Da die IS menschliches Verhalten bei der Nutzung von Informationssystemen zu erklären versucht, können neurowissenschaftliche Ansätze auch hier zum Erkenntnisfortschritt beitragen. Dimoka et al. (2007, S. 13) haben in diesem Zusammenhang in einer der ersten Publikationen hierzu formuliert: „It is just hard to believe that a better understanding of brain functioning will not lead to better IS theories.“ Vor dem Hintergrund der zunehmenden Internationalisierung der Wirtschaftsinformatik wird in der vorliegenden Diskussion das Thema „NeuroIS“ aufgegriffen. Verstärkt wird die Notwendigkeit der Diskussion von NeuroIS durch den Umstand, dass auch in anderen Wirtschaftsund Sozialwissenschaften neurowissenschaftliche Ansätze an Bedeutung gewinnen (z. B. Neuroökonomie, Camerer et al. 2005). In den Jahren 2009 und 2010 wurden in Österreich bereits zwei einschlägige wissenschaftliche Symposien durchgeführt, die explizit auf NeuroIS ausgerichtet waren. Auf der diesjährigen Tagung „Gmunden Retreat on Advances in NeuroIS“ (siehe http:// www.NeuroIS.org), auf der mehrere Fachvertreter der deutschsprachigen Wirtschaftsinformatikgemeinschaft vertreten waren, wurden Chancen und Herausforderungen von NeuroIS diskutiert. Dabei standen sowohl methodische als auch theoriebezogene Fragestellungen auf der Agenda. Ein zentrales Fazit der Tagung war, dass neurowissenschaftliche Ansätze nicht nur zur Erklärung menschlichen Verhaltens im Umgang mit Informationssystemen einen Beitrag leisten können, sondern auch für gestaltungsorientierte Wirtschaftsinformatiker von Relevanz sind. Dieser Umstand ist für die Akteure im deutschen Sprachraum von besonderem Interesse, liegt doch eine ihrer Stärken in der Gestaltung und dem Entwurf neuer innovativer Technologien. Um in der vorliegenden Diskussion eine breite Sichtweise auf die Thematik zu erhalten, wurden sowohl nordamerikanische Wissenschaftler als auch Vertreter der deutschsprachigen Wirtschaftsinformatik eingeladen, zum Thema Stellung zu nehmen. Folgende Personen sind der Einladung gefolgt (in alphabetischer Reihenfolge): Prof. Rajiv D. Banker, Merves Chair in Accounting and Information Technology, Fox School of Business and Management, Temple University, USA; Prof. Jan vom Brocke, Martin Hilti Chair in Business Process Management, University of Liechtenstein; Prof. Fred D. Davis, David D. Glass Chair in Information Systems, Sam M. Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas, USA; Prof. Pierre-Majorique Léger, Associate Professor am Department of Information Technologies, HEC Montréal, Kanada; Prof. Gernot R. Müller-Putz, Associate Professor am Institut für Semantische Datenanalyse/Knowledge Discovery, Laboratory of Brain-Computer Interfaces, Technische Universität Graz, Österreich; Prof. René Riedl, Associate Professor am Institut für Wirtschaftsinformatik – Information Engineering, Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, Österreich. Die sechs Autoren beleuchten in vier Beiträgen verschiedene Facetten der NeuroIS, die für die Wirtschaftsinformatik als relevant und bedeutsam erscheinen. René Riedl und Gernot R. MüllerPutz zeigen in ihrem Artikel anhand drei konkreter Beispiele, dass neurowissenschaftliche Ansätze zur Erklärung von Wirtschaftsinformatik-Phänomenen sowie zur Gestaltung von innovativen Informationssystemen verwendet werden können. Im Beitrag wird unter anderem über ein Laborexperiment auf Basis von eBay-Webseiten berichtet. Zudem wird auf Forschungsund Entwicklungsprojekte in der IT-Industrie Bezug genommen, die in den letzten Jahren als Prototypen der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt wurden. Jan vom Brocke nimmt in seinem Beitrag Stellung zur Rolle der Neurowissenschaften in der gestaltungsorientierten Wirtschaftinformatik-Forschung. Es wird gezeigt, dass neurowissenschaftliche Ansätze nicht nur in behavioristischen Forschungsansätzen eingesetzt werden können. Hierzu systematisiert vom Brocke die Einsatzpotenziale in der gestaltungsorientierten Forschung und unterscheidet den Ansatz Research by Design sowie den Ansatz Research on Design.
