Abstract: Volcanic plugs in northern Ethiopia have silica-saturated, alkali-rich trachytic compositions. They are enriched in incompatible trace elements and show negative Sr, Ba, Eu and Ti anomalies. Their compositions are distinct from those of felsic rocks within trap sequences, which are rhyolitic. The plugs are not the feeders to the trap volcanism but instead may be related to overlying shield volcanoes.
