One-Parameter Semigroups for Linear Evolution Equations

The description of coherent features of fluid flow is essential to our understanding of fluid-dynamical and transport processes. A method is introduced that is able to extract dynamic information from flow fields that are either generated by a (direct) numerical simulation or visualized/measured in a physical experiment. The extracted dynamic modes, which can be interpreted as a generalization of global stability modes, can be used to describe the underlying physical mechanisms captured in the data sequence or to project large-scale problems onto a dynamical system of significantly fewer degrees of freedom. The concentration on subdomains of the flow field where relevant dynamics is expected allows the dissection of a complex flow into regions of localized instability phenomena and further illustrates the flexibility of the method, as does the description of the dynamics within a spatial framework. Demonstrations of the method are presented consisting of a plane channel flow, flow over a two-dimensional cavity, wake flow behind a flexible membrane and a jet passing between two cylinders.

In inverse electrocardiography one tries to accurately and meaningfully characterize cardiac electrical activity from electrical potential measurements on the body surface and a volume model of the torso This is a typical ill-posed bioelectric field problem requiring constraints (regularization) One source of constraints is the strongly spatio-temporal nature of cardiac electrical activity However formulating such constraints in a tractable fashion can be challenging We review the major approaches used for this problem, and present work on a middle ground between simple non-electrophysiological constraints and strong electrophysiological constraints that eliminate useful complexity in solutions

Some Spatio-Temporal Approaches to Inverse Electrocardiography

Inverse electrocardiography in recent years has generally been approached using one of two quite distinct source models, either a potential-based approach or an activation- based approach. Each approach has advantages and disadvan- tages relative to the other, which are inherited by all specific methods based on a given approach. Recently our group has been working to develop models which can bridge between these two approaches, hoping to capture some of the most important advantages of both. In this work we present one such effort, which we term wavefront-based potential reconstruc- tion (WBPR). It is a modification of standard regularization methods for potential-based inverse electrocardiography, into which we incorporate a constraint based on a wavefront-like approximation to the potential-based solution. Initial results indicate significant improvement with respect to localization and characterization of the wavefront in simulations using both epicardially and supra-ventricularly paced heartbeats.

A wavefront-based constraint for potential surface solutions in inverse electrocardiography.

Addresses torque ripple reduction in current-fed switched reluctance motors (SRMs). Ripple-free torque production in SRMs requires an accurate model which is often too complex for practical implementation. The proposed algorithm combines the use of a simplified model (to reduce computational burden), with adaptation. Explicitly, it includes dynamic estimation of low harmonics of the combined unknown load torque and the ripple in the produced torque (due to simplification), and adds corresponding terms to the commanded current, to cancel these harmonics. Several simulations are presented, suggesting that our method is indeed effective for both constant and variable reference commands, even when a very crude model is used in control design.

This paper proposes a decomposition of periodically time varying systems in an attempt to reduce the often overwhelming number of modeling parameters involved. In many cases it would be possible to represent the system using only a few of those components. An a priori bound on the approximation error is derived in terms of the smoothness of the system parameters. Both continuous and discrete time systems are considered.
