Journal ArticleDOI

Chemical Reactions of the Copper Intrauterine Device

TL;DR: The effectiveness of the copper IUD may arise in 2 general ways: 1) the scission of disulfide bonds resulting in a modification of S-S containing proteins and mucus causing precipitation of albumins which may change the internal wall in such a way as to prevent implantation and 2) the presence of oxygen.
Journal ArticleDOI

Gonococcicidal action of copper in vitro

TL;DR: The sensitivity of gonococci to killing by copper may have application in relationship to the use of copper-containing intrauterine devices and prophylaxis against genital gonorrhea in women.
Journal ArticleDOI

Free radical production by metallic copper.

TL;DR: Incubation of copper in a benzene-saturated saline solution yields phenol showing that hydroxyl free radicals are produced, equivalent to that produced by X-rays at a dose rate of 14,000 rads per hour.
