Size effects on the tensile and compressive failure of notched composite laminates

TL;DR: In this paper, an experimental and analytical investigation of the effect of size on the strength of composite laminates with central holes loaded in tension and compression is presented, and the first-ply failure load of the outer ply is identified using a new method that postprocesses the displacement field obtained using the digital image correlation technique.
Journal ArticleDOI

Three-dimensional invariant-based failure criteria for fibre-reinforced composites

TL;DR: In this paper, a new three-dimensional failure criteria for fiber-reinforced composite materials based on structural tensors is presented, which is able to account for the nonlinear shear response typically observed in fibre-reined polymers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Notched response of non-crimp fabric thin-ply laminates

TL;DR: In this paper, an experimental investigation of the mechanical response of a new class of advanced composite materials manufactured using thin non-crimp fabrics was performed using two different lay-ups and the results showed that the lay-up with blocked plies and with higher differences in fiber orientation angles between consecutive plies has lower unnotched strength.
Journal ArticleDOI

Micro-mechanical analysis of the effect of ply thickness on the transverse compressive strength of polymer composites

TL;DR: In this paper, a micro-mechanical model is used to study the effect of ply thickness on constrained 90° plies subjected to transverse compressive loading (in situ effect).
Journal ArticleDOI

Determination of the mode I crack resistance curve of polymer composites using the size-effect law

TL;DR: In this article, the size effect law of double edge notched specimens was used to obtain the crack resistance curve of polymer composites reinforced by unidirectional fibres, and the results showed a good correlation between the crack resilience curve obtained using the size-effect law and that previously measured for one of the material systems using the compact tension test.
