1 Abstract - This study evaluated force and velocity parameters of vertical jump perfor - mance in countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ) and compared results for sprint runners and volleyball players. Twenty-four male athletes (12 regional/national- -level sprint runners and 12 national-level volleyball players) performed CMJ and SJ on a force platform. The following variables were analyzed: jump performance (jump height and power), peak velocity (PV), absolute and relative maximum force (MF), rate of force development (RFD,) and time to reach maximum force (TMF). In CMJ, jump height was correlated with PV (r=0.97) and normalized MF (r=0.47), whereas jump power was significantly correlated with all variables, except MF (r=0.12). In SJ, PV and normalized MF were significantly correlated with jump height (r=0.95 and r=0.51) and power (r=0.80 and r=0.87). In addition, TMF was inversely correlated with power (r=-0.49). Runners had higher performance variables (height and power), normalized MF and PV than volleyball players in both CMJ and SJ. Velocity and maximum force were the main determinants of height and power in the two types of vertical jumps. However, explosive force (RFD and TMF) was also important for power production in vertical jumps. Runners had a better vertical jump performance than volleyball players.

The aims of this study were: 1) to determine the anthropometric characteristics and body compositon of players; 2) to evaluate the maximal muscle power of the knee extensors muscles with the isokinetic dynamometry; 3) to determine the relationships between the test of isokinetic power and the vertical jum p test; 4) to compare the results between sports. A sample of 12 basketball players and 13 volleyball players was evaluated in several anthropometric measures and in two tests of muscle power. Body composition was determined through the equation by Jackson & Pollock (1978). Vertical jum p test was made without the arm movements, and the isokinetic muscle power test of the knee extensors was made in four speeds: 60, 180, 240 and 300°/sec.The results showed that the basketball players were taller, heavier and fatter than the volleyball players. There were no significant diferences in power output. When power was related to body weight, volleyball players showed higher values in the vertical jum p test and the isokinetic power test at 60°/sec. and in the vertical jump test when corrected by lean body mass. Relationships between maximal power tests showed from moderate to high degree between isokinetic power test at 180 and 300°/sec. and the vertical jum p test for basketball players. Volleyball players showed similar results at 180 and 300°/sec. Similar results were found when tests were corrected for body weight and lean body mass for basketball players, but in volleyball players relationships were from low to moderate

Potência muscular em jogadores de basquetebol e voleibol: a relação entre dinanometria isocinética e salto vertical

Objetivos: O alongamento muscular antes do exercicio e controverso quanto aos seus efeitos em relacao ao desempenho muscular. Com isso, o objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o efeito do alongamento estatico, balistico e da facilitacao neuromuscular proprioceptiva sobre a potencia muscular, tempo e altura de salto. Metodos: Para este estudo de intervencao, nao controlado e cruzado, foram incluidos 20 jovens estudantes da Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Parana, de ambos os sexos, com idade entre 18 a 28 anos, sem queixas de dor e sem lesoes musculoesqueleticas . A amostra foi dividida em quatro subgrupos, sendo que tres deles recebiam um dos tres tipos de alongamento (estatico, balistico ou facilitacao neuromuscular proprioceptiva), enquanto o quarto subgrupo era o controle. As intervencoes foram realizadas uma vez por semana, na forma de rodizio, ao longo de quatro semanas, ao final das quais todos os subgrupos haviam realizado todos os procedimentos em estudo. Logo apos os alongamentos (ou isoladamente, nos controles) eram realizados saltos em uma plataforma de saltos verticais e avaliadas variaveis relativas ao desempenho nessa prova . A analise estatistica foi feita por meio da Analise de Variância com medidas repetidas, com nivel de significância de 5% . Resultados:  Analisando-se as medias obtidas pelos quatro grupos para as variaveis do salto vertical, nao houve diferenca significativa na potencia muscular, tempo ou altura de salto, antes e apos a aplicacao dos tres tipos de alongamento. Os valores de p obtidos foram 0,508 para potencia muscular; 0,674 para tempo de salto; e 0,606 para altura de salto. Conclusoes: Se ha objetivo de ganho de extensibilidade previo a atividade fisica que envolva salto e potencia, nao se contraindica o uso de alongamento, visto que parece nao haver influencia negativa deste sobre variaveis importantes para o salto em jovens saudaveis, pelo menos dentro de um periodo de quatro semanas.

Effects of static, ballistic, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching on vertical jump variables

The aim of this study was to compare jump height and kinetic and kinematic com-ponents of countermovement vertical jumps between soccer and basketball players performed in two different arm swing conditions: with arm swing (WAS) and without arm swing (NAS) Nine basketball players (212 ± 29 years; 10164 ± 1458 kg; 195 ± 006 m) and nine soccer players (182 ± 07 years; 774 ± 758 kg; 181 ± 007 m) performed 12 maximal countermo-vement vertical jumps, including 6 WAS jumps and 6 NAS jumps, on a force platform that recorded the ground reaction force (GRF) The vertical component of the GRF was used to estimate jump height and to calculate the kinematic (duration of eccentric phase, duration of concentric phase, and maximal downward displacement of center of mass) and kinetic variables (mean power during the eccentric phase, mean power during the concentric, peak power, and peak force) The results showed no differences in jump height or in kinematic or kinetic variables between basketball and soccer players In addition, the results showed that the participants of the two groups jumped higher in the WAS condition (041 m) than in the NAS condition (036 m) because of a higher peak power (WAS=2768 W/kg067 and NAS=2413 W/kg067) and a longer concentric phase duration (WAS=020 s/m05 and NAS=019 s/m05) during WAS jump These results indicate that the basketball and soccer players studied here showed similar performance and the same kinematic and kinetic pattern in maximal vertical jumps and were comparably affected by the use of arm swing
