Thermal Effects of Radiation and Wind on a Small Bird and Implications for Microsite Selection

Blair O. Wolf, +1 more
- 01 Oct 1996 -
TL;DR: Analysis of the effects of solar radiation, wind speed, and their interaction on metabolic rates in the Verdin, Auriparus flaviceps shows the potential importance of daytime microclimate selection to balancing water and energy budgets in small birds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Increased energy expenditure due to increased territorial defense in male lizards after phenotypic manipulation

TL;DR: The results indicated that a primary contribution to tradeoffs between increased territorial defense and survivorship could be made by a 31% increase in energy expenditure in the field that is not due to an increase in standard metabolic rate.
Journal ArticleDOI

Variation in the respiratory quotient of birds and implications for indirect calorimetry using measurements of carbon dioxide production

TL;DR: The RQ for two bird species, Passer domesticus and Auriparus flaviceps, under several dietary and fasting regimes is reported, finding that RQ commonly differed substantially from those typically assumed in studies of energy metabolism and often included values below those explainable by current knowledge.
