This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Theory of fuzzy integrals and its applications

In those problems that deal with multiple sources of linguistic information we can find problems defined in contexts where the linguistic assessments are assessed in linguistic term sets with different granularity of uncertainty and/or semantics (multigranular linguistic contexts). Different approaches have been developed to manage this type of contexts, that unify the multigranular linguistic information in an unique linguistic term set for an easy management of the information. This normalization process can produce a loss of information and hence a lack of precision in the final results. In this paper, we shall present a type of multigranular linguistic contexts we shall call linguistic hierarchies term sets, such that, when we deal with multigranular linguistic information assessed in these structures we can unify the information assessed in them without loss of information. To do so, we shall use the 2-tuple linguistic representation model. Afterwards we shall develop a linguistic decision model dealing with multigranular linguistic contexts and apply it to a multi-expert decision-making problem.

A model based on linguistic 2-tuples for dealing with multigranular hierarchical linguistic contexts in multi-expert decision-making

In this paper we shall develop a procedure for combining numerical and linguistic information without loss of information in the transformation processes between numerical and linguistic information, taking as base for representing the information the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation model. We shall analyze the conditions to impose the linguistic term set in order to ensure that the combination procedure does not produce any loss of information. Afterwards the aggregation process will be applied to a decision procedure over a multi-attribute decision-making problem dealing with numerical and linguistic information, that is, with qualitative and quantitative attributes.

An approach for combining linguistic and numerical information based on the 2-tuple fuzzy linguistic representation model in decision-making

Consensus forming is a critical process in the present day computer assisted group decision-making (GDM) scenario. Most of the GDM problems are of strategic dimensions and get complicated due to their multi-criteria framework involving many subjective and quantitative factors. In this research, a technology selection problem has been considered for a manufacturing company. The problem has been modeled into a multi-person, multi-criteria and multi-preference scenario. Various preference modes have been transformed into Fuzzy Preference Relations. A soft consensus based group decision-making under linguistic assessments has been adopted here to eliminate the role of a moderator. To incorporate the offline/online characteristics in the re-evaluation phase of the discussion, a multi-agent system (MAS) based negotiation model is proposed to resolve a technology selection problem.

Consensus-based intelligent group decision-making model for the selection of advanced technology

The goal of the CAD parametric modeling is to create a 3D representation, flexible and complex enough to encourage the engineer to easily consider a variety of designs with the cost of applying changes as low as possible. Geometric modeling systems provide a virtual environment similar to the real one in which the physical model is constructed/designed and manipulated. Using such a system, the engineer models, adds, deforms and edits parts in the process of detailing a shape. The virtual model may look the same as the real physical model, but it’s intangible. However, the 3D virtual model is accompanied by its mathematical description, parameters, restraints and these eliminates the need of measurements for prototyping or mass production, can be modified at any modeling phase, can be tested in various ways etc., which is a major disadvantage of using a physical part. This paper presents some theoretical aspects regarding the design process of products including surfaces and a few case studies showing the many possibilities in creating complex surfaces using the CATIA v5 software.

Parametric Modeling of Surfaces Using CATIA v5 Environment

Scientific and engineering fields of Bioengineering (BE) and Medical (Health) Informatics (MI) are recognized as two key challenges within essential research and innovation strategies in EU and other leading regions and countries worldwide. Many universities are redesigning existing or developing new study programs to provide education and training for tomorrow’s biomedical engineers, physicians, and researchers. European Commission is responding to the evident needs by promoting actions through the variety of scientific (e.g. Framework Program and Horizon 2020) and educational (e.g. Tempus, Erasmus, etc.) strategies. The Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) granted regional Tempus project “Studies in Bioengineering and Medical Informatics - BioEMIS” aiming at introducing dedicated study programs at Western Balkan countries, namely Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The following, state of the art analysis of European study programs in BE and MI provides basic guidelines for creating new curricula.

The paper presents the methodology for multicriteria decision analysis based on negative-positive-neutral (NPN) logic, which is an extension of both crisp and fuzzy logic. As the basic modeling framework we use fuzzy cognitive maps (FCM) which are a set of meaningful concepts, connected to form a network, with fuzzy weighted links measuring the strength and direction of effect of cause concept over target concept. Introducing NPN logic to FCM modeling framework provides the possibility to measure, the so-called, side effect of each decision-making path. This information additionally describes under what mutual conditions between concepts FCM settles down in equilibrium. An illustrative example from the real industrial environment related to metal cutting process planning parameters analysis demonstrates the potential of the methodology.

Conceptual Framework for NPN Logic Based Decision Analysis

Total knee replacement (TKR) is considered, during last years, as a very successful surgical technique for removing knee joint deformities and eliminating pain caused by cartilage damage. In literature, as primary causes for knee joint endoprothesis damage are cited complex movements which cause occurrences of complex stress conditions, sagital radius conformity, sliding, types of materials etc. Aim of this study is analysis of contact stresses that occur on tibial implant for 15°, 45° and 60° knee flexion and 50 kg, 75 kg, 100 kg and 125 kg weight. Knee joint prosthesis model and finite elements method (FEM) analysis are done in software Catia V5. For this analysis we used ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for tibial implant material and AISI 316, AISI 317, AISI 321, 17-4PH, CoCrMo, Ti6Al4V and SAE A-286 for femoral component materials. Results show that area of maximal contact stress is identified in medial and lateral part of tibial implant. Von Mises stress values vary regarding of flexion degree and weight, but values are approximate for types of chosen materials. Cutting forces represent one of the most important qualitative-quantitative parameters of the metal cutting process. Data modeling using pure mathematics methods is fairly restricted, due to a very large number of influencing factors, as well as their intermediate correlations. Nowadays, artificial intelligence methods are very often used for that purpose. The paper presents the possibility of the cutting force modeling using the artificial neural networks, as well as hybrid, neuro-fuzzy system. Comparative analysis of the created models is given, as well.
