An insight into the analogies, state-of-the-art technologies, concepts, and prospects under the umbrella of perovskite materials (both inorganic-organic hybrid halide perovskites and ferroelectric perovskites) for future multifunctional energy conversion and storage devices is provided. Often, these are considered entirely different branches of research; however, considering them simultaneously and holistically can provide several new opportunities. Recent advancements have highlighted the potential of hybrid perovskites for high-efficiency solar cells. The intrinsic polar properties of these materials, including the potential for ferroelectricity, provide additional possibilities for simultaneously exploiting several energy conversion mechanisms such as the piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and thermoelectric effect and electrical energy storage. The presence of these phenomena can support the performance of perovskite solar cells. The energy conversion using these effects (piezo-, pyro-, and thermoelectric effect) can also be enhanced by a change in the light intensity. Thus, there lies a range of possibilities for tuning the structural, electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of perovskites to simultaneously harvest energy using more than one mechanism to realize an improved efficiency. This requires a basic understanding of concepts, mechanisms, corresponding material properties, and the underlying physics involved with these effects.

Perovskite lead-free dielectrics for energy storage applications

With the fast development of the power electronics, dielectric materials with high energy-storage density, low loss, and good temperature stability are eagerly desired for the potential application in advanced pulsed capacitors. Based on the physical principals, the materials with higher saturated polarization, smaller remnant polarization, and higher electrical breakdown field are the most promising candidates. According to this rule, so far, four kinds of materials, namely antiferroelectrics, dielectric glass-ceramics, relaxor ferroelectric and polymer-based ferroelectrics are thought to be more likely used in next-generation pulsed capacitors, and have been widely studied. Thus, this review serves to give an overall summary on the state-of-the-art progress on electric energy-storage performance in these materials. Moreover, some general future prospects are also provided from the existed theoretical and experimental results in this work, in order to propel their application in practice.

A comprehensive review on the progress of lead zirconate-based antiferroelectric materials

The development of high-performance capacitive energy storage devices is of critical importance to address an ever-increasing electricity need. The energy density of a film capacitor is determined by the dielectric constant and breakdown strength of dielectric materials. With the highest dielectric constant among the known polymers, poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based ferroelectric terpolymers are of great potential for high energy density capacitors. However, their energy storage capability has long been limited by the relatively low breakdown strength. Here we demonstrate remarkable improvements in the energy density and charge–discharge efficiency of the ferroelectric terpolymers upon the incorporation of ultra-thin boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs). It is found that BNNSs function as a robust scaffold to hamper the onset of electromechanical failure and simultaneously as an efficient insulating barrier against electrical conduction in the resulting polymer nanocomposites, resulting in greatly enhanced breakdown strength. Of particular note is the improved thermal conductivity of the terpolymer with the introduction of BNNSs; this is anticipated to benefit the stability and lifetime of polymer capacitors. This work establishes a facile, yet efficient approach to solution-processable dielectric materials with performance comparable or even superior to those achieved in the traditionally melt-extruded ultra-thin films.

Solution-processed ferroelectric terpolymer nanocomposites with high breakdown strength and energy density utilizing boron nitride nanosheets

Historically, multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLC's) have not been considered for energy storage applications for two primary reasons. First, physically large ceramic capacitors were very expensive and, second, total energy density obtainable was not nearly so high as in electrolytic capacitor types. More recently, the fabrication technology for MLC's has improved significantly, permitting both significantly higher energy density and significantly lower costs. Simultaneously, in many applications, total energy storage has become smaller, and the secondary requirements of very low effective series resistance and effective series inductance (which, together, determine how efficiently the energy may be stored and recovered) have become more important. It is therefore desirable to reexamine energy storage in ceramics for contemporary commercial and near-commercial dielectrics. Stored energy is proportional to voltage squared only in the case of paraelectric insulators, because only they have capacitance that is independent of bias voltage. High dielectric constant materials, however, are ferroics (that is ferroelectric and/or antiferroelectric) and display significant variation of effective dielectric constant with bias voltage. The common ferroelectric materials, whether based upon barium titanate or lead manganese niobate (PMN), in the high-field limit, exhibit an energy storage which increases linearly with bias voltage. Mixed phase, ferroelectric plus antiferroelectric, dielectrics from the lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) system, as predicted theoretically, show the best energy density at low to moderate fields. Surprisingly, maximum energy storage is not obtained in high dielectric constant materials but in those materials which display intermediate dielectric constant and the highest ultimate breakdown voltages.
