Journal ArticleDOI

Saffron, An Alternative Crop for Sustainable Agricultural Systems: A Review

TL;DR: The main biological, genetic and ecological traits associated with agronomic management techniques of saffron in relation to environmental conditions are reviewed and the biosynthetic pathway that leads to the formation ofsaffron secondary metabolites and their abundance in the spice is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analysis of flowering, stigmas yield and qualitative traits of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) as affected by environmental conditions

TL;DR: The evaluation of the influence of rainfall, temperature and corm density on flower phenology, stigmas yield and main compositional characteristics of two saffron corms provenience found that colder environment resulted in a higher flower production, but lower quality of stIGmas.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of mother corm dimension and sowing time on stigma yield, daughter corms and qualitative aspects of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) in a Mediterranean environment

TL;DR: The results show that, in a Mediterranean environment, appropriate crop techniques and selection of corms can result in economic levels of production and improve the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of saffron.
Journal ArticleDOI

Agronomic, chemical and genetic variability of saffron ( Crocus sativus L.) of different origin by LC-UV–vis-DAD and AFLP analyses

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that saffron corms of different origins, grown in the same experimental field, produce daughter cormS with different dimensions and still produce stigma samples with different pigment profiles, and therefore pigments can be used as chemotaxonomic markers.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of corm provenance and environmental condition on yield and apocarotenoid profiles in saffron (Crocus sativus L.)

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the influence of climatic condition and genotype on compositional characteristics of saffron and found that the influence was significantly influenced by environment and corm provenance.
