TL;DR: In this paper, a strong and consistent relationship between sunspot brightness and magnetic field strength was revealed, showing that the near infrared presents several new and powerful advantages in diagnostics of sunspot atmospheres: increased magnetic sensitivity in Zeeman split lines, increased sensitivity of umbral brightness to temperature, and reduced scattered light and seeing disturbances due to atmospheric turbulence.
Abstract: The near infrared presents several new and powerful advantages in the diagnostics of sunspot atmospheres: (1) increased magnetic sensitivity in Zeeman-split lines, (2) increased sensitivity of umbral brightness to temperature, and (3) reduced scattered light and seeing disturbances due to atmospheric turbulence. This has revealed a strong and consistent relationship between sunspot brightness and magnetic field strength.

TL;DR: In this paper, the optical properties of two recently available uniaxial crystalline materials, cerium fluoride (CeF 3 ) and lanthanum fluoride (LaF 3 ), are compared.
Abstract: We present data on two recently available uniaxial crystalline materials, cerium fluoride (CeF 3 ) and lanthanum fluoride (LaF 3 ). The characteristics presented include birefringence, transmission, temperature sensitivity, and field of view for wavelengths from the ultraviolet into the near infrared. Possible applications in polarization dependent devices are discussed. The optical properties of CeF 3 and LaF 3 are compared with commonly used crystalline materials.
