Journal ArticleDOI
Immobilization technologies in probiotic food production.
TL;DR: Probiotic microorganisms for the production of novel foods is discussed, while the benefits and criteria of using probiotic cultures are analyzed and immobilization/encapsulation applications in the food industry aiming at the prolongation of cell viability are described.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phytochemical Profile and Evaluation of the Biological Activities of Essential Oils Derived from the Greek Aromatic Plant Species Ocimum basilicum, Mentha spicata, Pimpinella anisum and Fortunella margarita
Eleni Fitsiou,Gregoria Mitropoulou,Katerina Spyridopoulou,Angeliki Tiptiri-Kourpeti,Manolis Vamvakias,Haido Bardouki,Mihalis Ι. Panayiotidis,Alex Galanis,Yiannis Kourkoutas,Katerina Chlichlia,Aglaia Pappa +10 more
TL;DR: All essential oil preparations exhibited a variable degree of antiproliferative activity, depending on the cancer model used, with the most potent one being sweet basil against an in vitro model of human colon carcinoma.
Journal ArticleDOI
Citrus medica essential oil exhibits significant antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity
Gregoria Mitropoulou,Eleni Fitsiou,Katerina Spyridopoulou,Angeliki Tiptiri-Kourpeti,Haido Bardouki,Manolis Vamvakias,Panayiotis Panas,Katerina Chlichlia,Aglaia Pappa,Yiannis Kourkoutas +9 more
TL;DR: C Citrus medica oil and limonene were shown to possess cancer-specific activity when tested against the skin melanoma A375 cells and normal skin cells (HaCat) and appeared to inhibit LPS-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exploitation of the biological potential of Satureja thymbra essential oil and distillation by-products
Dimitrios Tsimogiannis,Evanthia Choulitoudi,Andreas Bimpilas,Gregoria Mitropoulou,Yiannis Kourkoutas,Vassiliki Oreopoulou +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, Satureja Thymbra leaves were subjected to water-steam distillation to recover the essential oil (EO) and the water extract (Aq), and the solid byproduct was subjected to sequential Soxhlet extraction with ethyl acetate (EAc) and ethanol (EtOH).
Journal ArticleDOI
Composition, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiproliferative activity of Origanum dictamnus (dittany) essential oil
Gregoria Mitropoulou,Eleni Fitsiou,Elisavet Stavropoulou,Eleni Papavassilopoulou,Manolis Vamvakias,Aglaia Pappa,Antigoni Oreopoulou,Yiannis Kourkoutas +7 more
TL;DR: Investigation of the antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiproliferative properties of O. dictamnus essential oil revealed that it is a noteworthy growth inhibitor against the microbes studied and may represent an effective and inexpensive source of potent natural antimicrobial agents with health-promoting properties, which may be incorporated in food systems.
