Isotropic Liquid Crystal Elastomers as Exceptional Photoelastic Strain Sensors

Over the last few decades, the research on ferroelectric memories has been limited due to their dimensional scalability and incompatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The discovery of ferroelectricity in fluorite-structured oxides revived interest in the research on ferroelectric memories, with inducing nanoscale nonvolatility in state-of-the-art gate insulators by minute doping and thermal treatment. The potential of this approach has been demonstrated by the fabrication of sub-30 nm electronic devices. Nonetheless, to realize practical applications, various technical limitations, such as insufficient reliability including endurance, retention, and imprint, as well as large device-to-device-variation, require urgent solutions. Furthermore, such limitations should be considered based on targeting devices as well as applications. Various types of ferroelectric memories including ferroelectric random-access-memory, ferroelectric field-effect-transistor, and ferroelectric tunnel junction should be considered for classical nonvolatile memories as well as emerging neuromorphic computing and processing-in-memory. Therefore, from the viewpoint of materials science, this review covers the recent research focusing on the ferroelectric memories from the history of conventional approaches to the future prospects. Revival of Ferroelectric Memories Based on Emerging Fluorite-Structured Ferroelectrics.

Hydrogen is a clean, versatile, and energy-dense fuel that has the potential to play a key role in a low-carbon energy future. However, realizing this potential requires the development of efficient and cost-effective hydrogen generation and storage technologies. Hydrogen can be generated from a variety of sources, including fossil fuels, biomass, and renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. In regard to the renewable energy sources, this paper presents a review of the state-of-the-art in hydrogen generation methods including water electrolysis, gasification, dark fermentation, steam reforming, photocatalytic water splitting and water thermolysis. Further, this paper presents a review of the various hydrogen storage methods, including compression, liquefaction, liquid organic carriers, and solid-state storage. These technologies offer the potential for improved efficiency, safety, and environmental performance, and may play a key role in the transition to a hydrogen-based energy system. Finally, the advantages and challenges of hydrogen energy, and future perspectives on the improvement of hydrogen storage methods are well emphasized. Overall, the development of efficient and cost-effective hydrogen generation and storage technologies is essential for the widespread adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source. Continued research and development in this field will be critical to advancing the state-of-the-art and realizing the full potential of hydrogen as a key element in a sustainable energy future. 

State-of-the-art hydrogen generation techniques and storage methods: A critical review

The present invention non-destructively measures the strain distribution of entire quartz glass crucibles. A strain measurement device which comprises: light sources (11) which irradiate a quartz glass crucible (1) with light from the outside thereof; first polarising plates (12) and first quarter wavelength plates (13) which are disposed between the light sources (11) and the outer surface of the wall of the quartz glass crucible (1); a camera (14) which is disposed inside the quartz glass crucible (1); a camera control mechanism (15) which controls the direction of imaging of the camera (14); and a second polarising plate (16) and a second quarter wavelength plate (17) which are disposed between the camera (14) and the inner surface of the wall of the quartz glass crucible (1). The optical axis of the second quarter wavelength plate (17) is inclined by 90 DEG relative to the optical axis of the first quarter wavelength plates (13). The camera (14) is irradiated with light from the light sources (11) and images the light which has passed through the first polarising plates (12), the first quarter wavelength plates (13), the wall of the quartz glass crucible (1), the second quarter wavelength plate (17), and the second polarising plate (16).

Quartz glass crucible and strain measurement device therefor

The structure of metal electrode/HfZrOx (HZO)/AlON/n+-Si was employed as the platform to study how the effective work function (EWF) of the electrode affects the characteristics of the FTJ devices. By introducing TiAl into the conventional TiN electrode, the EWF is reduced which leads to a higher tunnel electroresistance (TER) ratio of 30 due to the improved LRS current arising from the lower barrier height for thermionic emission. In addition, the TiAl-based device also displays high switching speed of 500 ns and robust endurance up to 106, showing competitive advantages compared to others. Furthermore, the implementation of long-term plasticity is also demonstrated, implying potential applications for neuromorphic computing. The prominent properties make TiAl-based electrode as a compelling enabler for FTJ devices with even higher performance.

Enhanced Tunneling Electro-Resistance Ratio for Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions by Engineering Metal Work Function

An apparatus for quantifying unknown stress and residual stress of a material to be tested, the material being a birefringent or temporary birefringent material, which includes a light source, a polarizer in front of the light source for converting a light beam from the light source into a beam with linear polarization, a first quarter-wave plate in front of the polarizer for generating circular polarization, a standard material, a second quarter-wave plate, an analyzer, a loading unit, a spectrometer for obtaining transmissivity spectrum of the standard material under the wavelength of the light source and a detecting module connected to the spectrometer to have the transmissivity spectrum of the material to be tested and consequently a stress quantifying formula for the standard material.

Apparatus for quantifying unknown stress and residual stress of a material and method thereof

To face the increasing demand of residual stress measurement in many hi-tech industries, the integration of photoelasticity and advanced image acquisition equipment is a natural trend. With the integration of photoelasticity and spectrometry, the measurement capability of low-level stress and the stress in low birefringence materials can be enhanced. In fact, there is a significant correlation between the stress level and transmissivity spectrum. The key of the stress measurement method proposed in this paper is to find this scarcely explored correlation. By analyzing the periodic extinction phenomenon of isochromatic fringe pattern obtained from white light photoelasticity and the equation of transmissivity spectrum expressed in stress and wavelength, a three-dimensional (3D) systematic relationship of transmissivity with stress and wavelength can be established. By applying the 3D systematic transmissivity with stress and wavelength, the stress value can be determined directly from the transmissivity of the light transmitted through the polariscope. Moreover, when the proposed method is employed, the required parameters can be directly obtained from the database. There is no need to know the wavelength-dependent stress-optic coefficient beforehand. Glass, a very low birefringence material, was used to confirm the feasibility of the proposed method. Two regression approaches to search the transmissivity extremities were attempted to find the optimum systematic relationship.
