Review of single-shot 3D shape measurement by phase calculation-based fringe projection techniques

Phase shifting profilometry (PSP) using binary fringe patterns with projector defocusing is promising for high-speed 3D shape measurement. To obtain a high-quality phase, the projector usually requires a high defocusing level, which leads to a drastic fall in fringe contrast. Due to its convenience and high speed, PSP using squared binary patterns with small phase shifting algorithms and slight defocusing is highly desirable. In this paper, the phase accuracies of the classical phase shifting algorithms are analyzed theoretically, and then compared using both simulation and experiment. We also adapt two algorithms for PSP using squared binary patterns, which include a Hilbert three-step PSP and a double three-step PSP. Both algorithms can increase phase accuracy, with the latter featuring additional invalid point detection. The adapted algorithms are also compared with the classical algorithms. Based on our analysis and comparison results, proper algorithm selection can be easily made according to the practical requirement.

Superfast 3D absolute shape measurement using five binary patterns

Accurately and quickly obtaining the three-dimensional (3D) shape information of objects has become increasingly important in various scientific fields. However, simultaneously achieving the high-resolution and high-speed 3D shape measurement of unknown objects remains challenging in practice. In this Letter, we propose a novel variant shifting-phase method for 3D optical measurement. Based on a digital fringe projection system, the method performs a point-wise high-resolution measurement of objects by projecting only four intensity-coded patterns. We can retrieve the wrapped phases and their corresponding fringe orders simultaneously from these four patterns, and do not require any pre-acquired information of the object. The experimental results successfully demonstrate the effectiveness of the easy-to-operate method.

Sinusoidal fringe patterns are popularly used in conventional Fourier transform profilometry. There are numerous harmonics in the Fourier spectrum, so as to avoid spectrum overlapping; the maximum range of measurement is limited. The present paper studies FTP based on properly defocusing a binary square wave. There are only odd harmonics in the Fourier spectrum of a binary square wave, and the maximum range of measurement is expanded 1.5 times. Defocusing has a low-pass filtering effect and higher-order odd harmonics are suppressed. Therefore, the fundamental spectrum is easy to extract. The proposed method overcomes the filtering problem of conventional FTP. Measurement experiments show that the proposed method has a good measurement result and the measurement accuracy is improved.
