While most papers_new on team decision-making find teams to behave more selfish, less trusting and less altruistic than individuals, Cason and Mui (1997) report that teams are more altruistic than individuals in a dictator game. Using a within-subjects design we re-examine group polarization by letting subjects make individual as well as team decisions in an experimental dictator game. In our experiment teams are more selfish than individuals, and the most selfish team member has the strongest influence on team decisions. Various sources of the different findings in Cason and Mui (1997) and in our paper are discussed.

The Social Psychological Effects of Group Decision Rules

Group decision-making (GDM) or collaborative decision-making pursuits the “wisdom of the crowd” through deciding by more than one decision-maker (DM). From family outings to the presidential elections, GDM is all around. To help DMs make more wiser choices, many different GDM methods have been or will be developed, from social choice function to GDM methods based on behaviors. The review of GDM methods and applications can help DMs quickly choose the suitable one from numerous methods and applications and can promote the development of GDM theory. This chapter does a review on GDM and discusses the future studies on GDM. 

Group Decision-Making

We assess in the laboratory the impact of promises on group decision-making. The gift-exchange game provides the testing ground for our experiment. When played between groups, inter-group cooperation and reciprocity represent a condition for efficiency in overall decision making. We find that promises have a significant positive effect on aggregate profits. We interpret these findings as if promises act as a trigger of social conformity, according to which groups adopt socially more desirable behavior even without face-to-face communication or discussion.
