Journal ArticleDOI

Origin and Evolution of B Chromosomes in the Cichlid Fish Astatotilapia latifasciata Based on Integrated Genomic Analyses

TL;DR: A model in which the B chromosome originated early in the evolutionary history of Lake Victoria cichlid fish from a small fragment of one autosome is proposed, and intact B chromosome genes involved with microtubule organization, kinetochore structure, recombination and progression through the cell cycle may play a role in driving the transmission of the B chromosomes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Variability of 18S rDNA locus among Symphysodon fishes: chromosomal rearrangements

TL;DR: Three species of cichlids belonging to the genus Symphysodon have demonstrated interspecific and intraspecific variation in nucleolus organizer regions (NOR) detected with silver nitrate, which suggests that structural chromosome rearrangements effectively act in the karyoevolution of wild symphysodon species and may have favoured the adaptability of these fishes to diverse aquatic environments in the Amazon.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cytogenetic Mapping of the Retroelements Rex1, Rex3 and Rex6 among Cichlid Fish: New Insights on the Chromosomal Distribution of Transposable Elements

TL;DR: Comparison analysis suggests that Rex elements could differ in their chromosomal distribution among different fish groups or species and that intrinsic aspects of the genomes could influence the spread, accumulation or elimination of TEs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Functional and evolutionary analyses of the miR156 and miR529 families in land plants

TL;DR: The results suggest loss of functionality of MIR529 genes in the evolutionary history of eudicots and show that the miR529-responsive element present in some eudicot SPLs is still functional, indicating that these two target sites might be under distinct evolutionary constraints.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparative Cytogenetic Analysis of the Genus Symphysodon (Discus Fishes, Cichlidae): Chromosomal Characteristics of Retrotransposons and Minor Ribosomal DNA

TL;DR: The role of repetitive elements in adaptation to highly diverse habitats, as well as in the generation of the phenotypic and genetic variability found in wild Discus populations, needs to be further investigated.
