Forest management is an important carbon mitigation strategy for developing countries. As demonstrated by the case of Mexico, community forest management is especially effective because it offers tangible local benefits while conserving forests and sequestering carbon. Community forestry receives minimal government support now, but the clean development mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol could leverage additional resources to promote the approach in Mexico and elsewhere. We argue that adequately designed and implemented, community forestry management projects can avoid deforestation and restore forest cover and forest density. They comprise promising options for providing both carbon mitigation and sustainable rural development. These kinds of projects should be included in the CDM.

The rapid growth of the global aging population has raised attention to the health and healthcare needs of older adults The purpose of this mini-review is to: (1) elucidate the complex factors affecting the relationship between chronological age, socio-economic status (SES), access to care, and healthy aging using a SES-focused framework; (2) present examples of interventions from across the globe; and (3) offer recommendations for research-guided action to remediate the trend of older age being associated with lower SES, lack of access to care, and poorer health outcomes Evidence supports a relationship between SES and healthcare access as well as healthcare access and health outcomes for older adults Because financial resources are proportional to health status, efforts are needed to support older adults and the burdened healthcare system with financial resources This can be most effective with grassroots approaches and interventions to improve SES among older adults and through data-driven policy and systems change

Socioeconomic Status and Access to Healthcare: Interrelated Drivers for Healthy Aging.

Campylobacter jejuni, a widespread food-borne pathogen is responsible for enteritis in the populations of both industrialised and developing nations and is acquired by consumption of contaminated water, milk and food products. Contaminated poultry meat is regarded as an important source of campylobacteriosis, with both commercial broiler and turkey growing flocks infected at two to three weeks of age by direct and indirect horizontal exposure. Non-chlorinated water is regarded as a vehicle of infection, followed by rapid intraflock dissemination. Intensification in the poultry industry has contributed to the increased prevalence rates on carcasses associated with increased stocking density and mechanized processing which are inherent to the high efficiency dictated by a competitive market. Currently, pre- and post-harvest control measures may ameliorate the problem of Campylobacter infection in consumers. Refrigerated storage and transport of red meat and poultry, appropriate handling and food preparation, and thorough cooking reduce the possibility of food-borne infection. In view of the world-wide distribution of C. jejuni infection and the multiplicity of sources, including non-pasteurised milk and contaminated water, it is inappropriate to impose trade restrictions on poultry meat based on the detection of campylobacters.

Campylobacter infection of commercial poultry.

This research explores interactions between farmers’ knowledge and socioeconomic circumstances and the floristic composition of multistrata coffee plantations in Chiapas, Mexico. Interviews with 24 individual farmers with accompanying vegetation transects and two community level participatory workshops were carried out. The frequency, density, dominance, utility and importance value for all tree species surveyed were obtained. Farmers were grouped by cluster analysis on the basis of their land area, time producing coffee and the age of their coffee farms but the dominant shade species in their coffee plantations was not influenced by socioeconomic status (p<0.05). A total of 74 shade species were recorded and classified as temporary, suitable, or unsuitable as shade species by farmers, based on attributes such as leaf phenology, foliage density, crown shape and the amount and timing of litter decomposition, as well as their overall impact on coffee yield. Principal component and cluster analysis using these attributes confirmed the consistency of the farmers’ classification system. A group of preferred species was identified, but less than half the trees recorded on farms were of these species, showing that farmers retained a wide range of trees and shrubs in their plantations, taking into account not only commercial interests but also their contribution to ecosystem functions. Farmers harnessed the forces of secondary succession by retaining pioneers as temporary shade, knowing that they would naturally be succeeded, while at the same time promoting and tolerating other longer living native species that they considered more suitable as coffee shade. Managing diverse secondary succession instead of establishing monospecific shade was an efficient way for farmers to achieve acceptable coffee yields while contributing to biodiversity and landscape conservation that could allow them access to niche markets.
