Journal ArticleDOI
Population trends in Vermivora warblers are linked to strong migratory connectivity.
Gunnar R. Kramer,David E. Andersen,David A. Buehler,Petra Bohall Wood,Sean M. Peterson,Justin A. Lehman,Kyle R. Aldinger,Lesley P. Bulluck,Sergio R. Harding,Jack Jones,John P. Loegering,Curtis G. Smalling,Rachel Vallender,Henry M. Streby +13 more
TL;DR: This work tracked individual songbirds from a two-species complex of New World warblers and discovered unequivocal evidence of a system in which strong associations between breeding areas and nonbreeding areas is concordant with breeding population trends.
Journal ArticleDOI
Minimizing marker mass and handling time when attaching radio-transmitters and geolocators to small songbirds
Henry M. Streby,Tara L. McAllister,Sean M. Peterson,Gunnar R. Kramer,Justin A. Lehman,David E. Andersen +5 more
TL;DR: Improvements to the design and deployment of the leg-loop harness method will enable the safe and successful use of these markers, and eventually GPS and other tags, on similarly small songbirds.
Journal ArticleDOI
Tornadic storm avoidance behavior in breeding songbirds.
Henry M. Streby,Gunnar R. Kramer,Sean M. Peterson,Justin A. Lehman,David A. Buehler,David E. Andersen +5 more
TL;DR: The first documentation of obligate long-distance migrant birds undertaking a facultative migration is presented, wherein breeding golden-winged warblers carrying light-level geolocators performed a >1,500 km 5-day circumvention of a severe tornadic storm.
Journal ArticleDOI
Geolocators on Golden-winged Warblers do not affect migratory ecology
Sean M. Peterson,Henry M. Streby,Gunnar R. Kramer,Justin A. Lehman,David A. Buehler,David E. Andersen +5 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that some small songbirds can be safely marked with geolocators, and light stalks appear to be unnecessary for Golden-winged Warblers; the added mass and drag of stalks can probably be eliminated on other small songbird species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nonbreeding isolation and population-specific migration patterns among three populations of Golden-winged Warblers
Gunnar R. Kramer,Henry M. Streby,Sean M. Peterson,Justin A. Lehman,David A. Buehler,Petra Bohall Wood,Darin J. McNeil,Jeffery L. Larkin,Jeffery L. Larkin,David E. Andersen +9 more
TL;DR: This paper used geolocators to track annual movements of 21 Golden-winged Warblers from three North American breeding locations experiencing varying population trends to investigate the potential for non-breeding site factors to influence breeding populations.
