西方学术术语的引入与翻译,其＂译名＂的科学性和准确度,要求等值地完成这一术语在另一语言中的内涵意义、表述方式和解读途径。然而一名之立,有时即便历经世纪辗转也难能求得＂完美＂之词,阐释学（her-meneutics）译名就属一例。我国学者在翻译这一外来术语时,或许过多的依托于学科、流派或个人见解为准则的取舍尺度,故译名泛而不精,概念漂移模糊,大有疏于源术语整体学术框架中的具体含义以及译入语内的整体概念表述之嫌,从而必然地引发出了某些视角和认知上的混乱。Hermeneutics一词的理想＂译名＂不仅应与来源语有着相对应的整体概念,同时还应在译入语的语言形态表述中具有同等的唯一性和权威性。

The Psalms, Their Origin and Meaning

IT is not difficult to demonstrate that the Old Testament is wholly and in every respect a product of history. This is true even of the Old Testament \"canon, for it exists in a variety of historically conditioned forms. Therein lies a problem, particularly for the Reformed Church who read the Old Testament in the translation of Luther. For Luther's Bible did not follow in its selection of \"canonical writings the ancient and medieval and current ecclesiastical tradition which adopted the Old Testament \"canon used in the Hellenistic synagogue and passed on in the Latin translation. Luther, rather, with regard to the compass of the Old Testament, reverted to the \"canon of the Hebrew synagogue, which until then did not have the church's legitimation. This historicity characterizes the entire text of the Old Testament which demonstrably and evidently has been affected by the passage of time, just like any other work of literature handed down to us as manuscripts from ancient times. It is true of the individual books of the Old Testament, all of which clearly raise the question about the historical situation in which they emerged. In fact, it is true of every single word in the Old Testament, formulated as it is in a language which had its own time and history and which, therefore, is not fully intelligible unless its time and history are known. The recognition of these facts does not depend on some one particular approach to the Old Testament, selected out of several which are possible ; these facts simply are given with the Old Testament and cannot be disregarded as a matter of preference.

I. The "Re-presentation" of the Old Testament in Proclamation

This article is part of an attempt to read Psalm 78 multidimensionally. It is the second in a proposed series of three articles. 2 The articles deal with the dimension of the author, as part of the multi-dimensional reading. It deals with the heading of the Psalm, ihe redaction history of the Psalm, its dating and historical setting and its canonical shape. The Sitz im Leben of the psalm is the recitation of the psalm in the Jerusalem temple by a (Levitical) priest, when there was an attempt to unite the worship of the North and the South during the divided monarchy (922-587 B.C.). The traditions of wisdom, covenant-Torah, guidance, wilderness, Exodus, and conquest are united in Psalm 78, forming a new welded tradition which stresses the importance of remembrance with regard to the survival of the ancient traditions. Psalm 78 can be seen as an example of God’s response to ihe questions and complaints from the adjacent psalms and other psalms in Book III of the Psalter. In this regard, Psalm 78 is not a mere report of Israel’s failure, but of the triumph of Yahweh’s covenantal faithfulness which creates a new beginning for the people of God.

This article is the third and final one in a series of articles on Psalm 78. The different articles are part of an experiment in a multidimensional reading and each of them deals independently with an aspect of the interpretation of Psalm 78. While the previous two articles deal with the textual and authorial dimensions of Psalm 78, this article will deal with the dimension of the reader and will make some final concluding remarks on the whole series. The diachronic aspect of the reader, on the one hand, can be described from the first (original) hearers/readers of the text up to modern readers because reception is an ongoing process which constitutes a continuation of the diachronic aspect. On the other hand, the synchronic aspect of the reader is constituted by the context in which and from which readers operate. As stated in the first article of this series accepting the principle of a pluralism of exegetical methodologies is a methodological presupposition for this study. Based on this presupposition various exegetical methods that elucidate the meaning of the psalm have been employed in this study. As basis for this plurality of exegetical methodologies, the communication model has been adapted as hermeneutical framework. As a result, the three basic elements of the communication process (the sender, the medium, and the receiver) constitute the model of this multidimensional reading of Psalm 78. Based on the mutual relationship between diachronic and synchronic aspects, the investigation of the heading, of the tradition history, of the dating and the historical setting (with Sitz im Leben), and the study of the canonical shape of Psalm 78 have all contributed to yield some new and fresh insight for understanding the psalm’s own genesis.

The Antiochene exegetes, most notably Diodore of Tarsus and Theodore of Mopsuestia read the psalms against the historical background of Israelite history, reconstructing a historical setting for every psalm. This paper presents a brief survey of Antiochene exegesis of the psalms in general. The Antiochenes reacted against the allegorical interpretation of the Old Testament by the school of Alexandria. They were influenced in their approach by Aristotelian logic, by the Greek-Christian culture of their time and by the method propagated by Aristarch. This survey is followed by a discussion of the interpretation of Psalm 46 by Diodore, Theodore and Iso`dâdh of Merv. Diodore laid the foundation on which Theodore built. Iso`dâdh followed the interpretation of this Psalm by Theodore. They linked this psalm to the events of the Syro-Ephraimite war.

Reading the Psalms historically: antiochene exegesis and a historical reading of Psalm 46

Dr. P. C. Snijman was the first South African scholar to obtain a Ph.D. in Old Testament Studies at the Free University of Amsterdam, with a thesis on the prophecy of Zephaniah. He died shortly after returning to South Africa. The aim of this paper is to describe the life and contribution of this pioneer in the field of Old Testament Studies in South Africa. This paper starts with a biographical sketch of Snijman. He was one of the pioneers of Christelik-Nasionale Onderwys (Christian National Education). His contribution in this regard is discussed, with special reference to a paper he wrote in 1910. His contribution to the study of Zephaniah is evaluated, with a discussion of some examples of his exegesis. It is clear that his death impacted negatively on the study of the Old Testament in his own church and in South African theological circles in general.

In the book of the prophet Ezekiel, indications are found of the interaction between the prophet and his audience. Prophecy always had the aim to convince its audience of something and are therefore always of a rhetorical nature. It happens frequently that the rhetorical aim and situation of a prophetic book receives attention. This article attempts to reconstruct the possible original rhetorical situation of those instances where the prophet uses quotations and react on them. Before discussing the different cases, three theoretical issues receive attention, namely the rhetorical approach used in this article, the use of quotations in the Bible and so-called disputations. In the book, quotations occur in two contexts, namely before and after the fall of Jerusalem. The refutation of the quotations aims to address the despondency of the exiles and exhorting them with the message that God will bring deliverance in the future.
