A simple technique for solving the problem of an E-polarized plane wave scattered by three objects consisting of two wedges and a cylinder is presented. The method is based on an extension of the Karp and Russek solution for the diffraction by a wide slit, and is applied here to investigate the transmission coefficient through the aperture of a wide double wedge in the presence of a circular dielectric or conducting cylinder whose axis is parallel to the edges of the two wedges. An improvement in the transmission coefficient is observed in the presence of a dielectric cylinder, whereas a conducting cylinder yields a lower transmission coefficient relative to the case when the cylinder is absent.

Scattering by a double wedge and a parallel cylinder

Radar detection of an airplane flying near the ground is not possible. To solve this problem, we analyze electromagnetic wave scattering by a conducting cylinder located near the conducting plane. The backward and omnidirectional scattering patterns and field distributions (E and H wave) near the cylinder are derived for the plane wave incidence. A similar analysis is made for a cylindrical wave. The theory is confirmed by a model experiment using a linear current source at 9.6 GHz.

Electromagnetic scattering by a conducting cylinder located near the conducting plane

In one treatment of the behavior of electromagnetic scattering, the electromagnetic energy flux density is represented by stream lines. In this paper, the Poynting vector of the total field as the sum of the incident field and the scattered field is separated into the incident flux, scattered flux, and coupled flux. They are represented as sums of the apparent incident and scattered fluxes proposed in this paper, and a physical image of electromagnetic scattering by a conductive cylinder is obtained. The total incident energy conveyed by this apparent incident flux is equal to the total energy scattered from the cylinder. Geometrical representation of scattering cross section in cylindrical conductor : apparent poynting vector

The numerical solution of the near field patterns of both axial and circumferential slots on a circular conducting cylinder is obtained. Equiamplitude contours around the cylinder and radial variation of the field along the constant azimuthal coordinates are presented. The calculated results show that the pattern above the slot completely coincide with that of a similarly situated slot in an infinite ground plane.

Numerical study of the near field radiated by an infinitely long slot on circular conducting cylinder

Problems associated with the scattering of electromagnetic radiation on cylindrical structures, for a long time attracted the attention of researchers. These objects have the basic nature for various branches of radioelectronics and optics. Diffraction of waves on cylinders of different configurations has been studied intensively in various branches of science and technology [1, 2]. In particular, multilayer cylinders are used for the simulation of optical fibers and various devices of gradient optics: the Luneburg lens, the Eaton-Lippmann lens and the "fish-eye" Maxwell lenses [3]. In addition, providing a periodic variation of the material parameters of the layers, it can be created effective microwave and optical waveguide system based on multilayer dielectric structures – Bragg waveguides [4]. In this paper the important problem of the electromagnetic field spatial distribution visualization for the wave scattered by a multilayer dielectric cylinder is considered. The solution of this problem allows investigating of the focusing properties of such structures and to optimize their parameters and dimensions. The construction of the spatial distribution of the coordinate components of the field scattered by a multilayered cylinder was carried out using the graphics capabilities of computer algebra package MathCAD. Calculated project was developed on the basis of solving of the problem of diffraction of a plane monochromatic wave on an infinite multilayer cylinder. Matrix method of the linear algebraic equations set solving is used for acceleration of the calculations. The project allows to perform investigations for arbitrary number of structure layers, their geometric dimensions and material parameters. Characteristics of the scattered fields for different values of the material parameters of the structure and normalized geometrical dimensions were considered using the developed calculation project. It should be noted that the refractive indices of the layers may be negative, i.e. this project can be suitable for the investigation of structures with metamaterials.

Simulations of the Plane Wave Scattering by Multilayer Cylindrical Structure

Numerical investigation of scattering electromagnetic plane waves by a circular conducting cylinder is considered. The results presented are 1) validity of asymptotic far-field expressions when it is applied to calculate near-field around the cylinder and 2) equicontours of amplitude and phase of total field around the cylinder.
