Assessment of natural radioactivity in fertilizers and phosphate ores in Egypt

The activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were determined in 30 agricultural and virgin soil samples randomly collected from Kedah, north of Malaysia, at a fertile soil depth of 0–30 cm. Gamma-ray spectrometry was applied using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray detector and a PC-based MCA. The mean radioactivity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were found to be 102.08 ± 3.96, 133.96 ± 2.92, and 325.87 ± 9.83 Bq kg−1, respectively, in agricultural soils and 65.24 ± 2.00, 83.39 ± 2.27, and 136.98 ± 9.76 Bq kg−1, respectively, in virgin soils. The radioactivity concentrations in agricultural soils are higher than those in virgin soils and compared with those reported in other countries. The mean values of radium equivalent activity ( ), absorbed dose rates (nGy h−1), annual effective dose equivalent, and external hazard index ( ) are 458.785 Bq kg−1, 141.62 nGy h−1, and 0.169 mSv y−1, respectively, in agricultural soils and 214.293 Bq kg−1, 87.47 nGy h−1, and 0.106 mSv y−1, respectively, in virgin soils, with average of 0.525. Results were discussed and compared with those reported in similar studies and with internationally recommended values.

Radiological impact of natural radioactivity in Egyptian phosphate rocks, phosphogypsum and phosphate fertilizers.

Background: Health hazards associated with exposure due to the natural radioactivity which is a part of our physical environment are of great concern. In order to assess the risks associated with exposure due to the natural radioactivity in soil and building materials, extensive studies have been carried out all over the world. The most commonly encountered radionuclide’s are 238 U, 232 Th, their decay products and 40K. Materials and Methods: In order to study the concentration of these radionuclides soil, sand, gravel aggregates, bricks and marble, samples were collected from different sites and local suppliers of the district Mirpur, Azad Kashmir (Pakistan). 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K activities in the collected samples were measured using HPGe detector. The measured specific radioactivity concentration of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K in the studied samples ranged from 10 ±1 to 47 ± 2, 18 ± 1 to 75 ± 4 and 40 ± 3 to 683 ±3 Bq.kg-1, respectively. Results: From the measured activity concentration, radium equivalent activity, external and internal hazard indices, gamma and alpha indices, terrestrial absorbed dose and annual effective dose were calculated. Maximum value of radium equivalent activity of 197.1 ± 9 Bq.kg-1 was observed in soil sample whereas minimum value of 45.9 ± 2 Bq.kg -1 was found in gravel aggregates. Relatively higher mean values of hazard indices were found in brick samples. Annual effective dose varied from 0.06 ± 0.01 to 0.47 ± 0.02 mSv.y-1. Conclusion: Current values of annual effective dose, radium equivalent activity and hazard indices have been found to be within the recommended limits. Iran. J. Radiat. Res., 2011; 9(2): 77­87

Assessment of radiological hazards due to soil and building materials used in Mirpur Azad Kashmir Pakistan

Abstract Exploration and exploitation of intelligent computing infrastructures are becoming of great interest for the research community to investigate different fields of science and engineering offering new improved versions of problem-solving soft computing-based methodologies. The current investigation presents a novel artificial neural network-based solution methodology for the presented problem addressing the properties of Hall current on magneto hydrodynamics (MHD) flow with Jeffery fluid towards a nonlinear stretchable sheet with thickness variation. Generalized heat flux characteristics employing Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model (CCHFM) along with modified Ohms law have been studied. The modelled PDEs are reduced into a dimensionless set of ODEs by introducing appropriate transformations. The temperature and velocity profiles of the fluid are examined numerically with the help of the Adam Bashforth method for different values of physical parameters to study the Hall current with Jeffrey fluid and CCHFM. The examination of the nonlinear input–output with neural network for numerical results is also conducted for the obtained dataset of the system by using Levenberg Marquardt backpropagated networks. The value of Skin friction coefficient, Reynold number, Deborah number, Nusselt number, local wall friction factors and local heat flux are calculated and interpreted for different parameters to have better insight into flow dynamics. The precision level is examined exhaustively by mean square error, error histograms, training states information, regression and fitting plots. Moreover, the performance of the designed solver is certified by mean square error-based learning curves, regression metrics and error histogram analysis. Several significant results for Deborah number, Hall parameters and magnetic field parameters have been presented in graphical and tabular form.

Hall effect on MHD Jeffrey fluid flow with Cattaneo–Christov heat flux model: an application of stochastic neural computing

In this paper, a neighboring-pixel-based virtual imaging (NPBVI) technique is developed to comprehensively detect the shading conditions on PV arrays. The proposed VI technique is then merged with a probabilistic mechanism of shaded module currents. Finally, a mathematical model is presented, which predicts the current voltage (I-V) region corresponding to the global maximum (GM) of the shaded PV array. The effectiveness of the proposed NPBVI MPPT is validated through numerous experiments that were carried out using a hardware prototype with a 150 W power rating. For the experiments, a PV array consisting of 3 × 2 (Np × Ns) 20 W PV modules was utilized. The experiments showcase agreement that the proposed method successfully identified the GM region of a partially shaded PV array.
