Minimal models for disk brake squeal

This survey is devoted to a significant role of var ious dry friction laws in engineering sciences. Both advantages and disadvantages of a frict ional process are illustrated and discussed, but excluding the nature of friction. It is shown how the classic friction laws and modern friction theories exists in today pure and a pplied sciences. Static and dynamic friction models are described. An important role of purely theoretical and experimental investigations in developing the appropriate fricti on models is outlined putting an emphasis on new approaches (models proposed by Bay-Wanheim, Dahl, Bliman-Sorine, LundGrenoble, as well as atomic scale and fractal model s, among others). Friction treated as a complex process being in interaction with wear, hea t emission and deformation is also discussed. Then an impact of dry friction models on today dynamical systems theory is reviewed. Finally, an application of friction to mo del a brake mechanism as a mechanical system with two degrees-of-freedom including experimental and numerical analyses is given. The properties of a passive vibration absorber with dry friction significantly differ from those of the classical linear absorber. The exceptional phenomenon is the possibility of suppressing all excited modes. This effect is influenced to a small extent by a special shape of the friction characteristic, but mainly by an appropriately adjusted threshold of the static friction. The theoretical predictions are confirmed by experimental investigations.

Passive vibration absorber with dry friction

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the transmission of shear forces in sheet pile interlocks. This transmission strongly determines the safety of retaining walls made up of U-sheet piles. The limits are given by no and full transfer of the shear at the interlock between the piles. The bending stiffness in the first case is only about one-third compared to that of the second case. Operating values for real systems given in literature and code vary in a broad range within those limits. By estimating the characteristic of the shear force F versus the relative displacement x of small elements at different positions y along the interlocks, it was possible to explain the different results. It was found that F(x,y) depends not only on the coordinates but also on several uncertain, unknown factors. The uncertainty results mainly from the unknown penetration process. The process is determined by the velocity of the penetration, which itself is influenced by the state of the soil inside the clutches...

Raumliche Verzweigungsprobleme elastischer Stabe werden i. a. durch Systeme gewohnlicher Differentialgleichungen mit variablen Koeffizienten beschrieben, deren Eigenwerte nicht explizit angebbar sind. Anstatt die klassischen Naherungsmethoden (z. B. Ritz-Galerkin, finite Methoden) zu verwenden, wird an zwei typischen Beispielen gezeigt, das die Storungsrechnung, die bisher fast ausschlieslich in der Kinetik bekannt ist, auch in der Elastostatik sehr schnell zu guten Ergebnissen fuhrt.
