The eye diagram of a 100 Gbit/s optical signal has been successfully measured using sum-frequency-generation optical sampling, which uses an organic crystal (AANP: 2-adamantylamino-5-nitropyridine) with high optical nonlinearity to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured waveform. Using this method, a signal-to-noise ratio > 17 dB is obtained at a signal peak power of 270 mW.

100 Gbit/s optical signal eye-diagram measurement with optical sampling using organic nonlinear optical crystal

Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (KTiOPO4) is one of the best nonlinear optical crystals for the frequency doubling of 1.06 μm Nd:YAG lasers. Its large optical nonlinearity, high optical damage threshold and outstanding thermal stability has made it the material of choice for high power industrial and medical laser applications where reliability are of prime importance. Yet, KTP is just one member of the isomorphic compounds having the generic composition MTiOXO4 where {M = NH4, K, Rb, TI and Cs} and {X = P and As}. Along with its isomorphs, KTP offers exceptional versatility for device design and optimization in both bulk- and micro-optical applications. This versatility is directly related to the open covalent crystal structure of KTP. In this paper, we review recent progress in the understanding of the crystal chemistry of the KTP family of isomorphs and summarize recent progress in KTP-based devices.

Quasi‐perfect polar alignment of nonlinear chromophores in a crystalline H‐bonded guest–host structure: 2‐Amino‐5‐nitropyridinium‐L‐monohydrogentartrate

This chapter presents an overview of the current status of second-order nonlinear optical organic materials for their use in photonic applications such as optical frequency converters and electro-optic modulators. Special emphasis is placed on the material aspects and a thorough discussion of presently available substances. The potential of organic materials for third-order nonlinear optical applications has been presented in detail in Chap. 2. Earlier reviews of organic nonlinear optical materials covering different physical and material aspects can be found in [3.1–8].

Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Organic Materials: Recent Developments

Several organic materials with a bulky donor group have been developed for second‐order nonlinear optics. Among these materials, 2‐adamantylamino‐5‐nitropyridine (AANP) crystal has the largest second‐order nonlinear optical coefficient. By second‐harmonics measurement at 1.064 μm, coefficients of d31 and d33 were determined to be 80 and 60 pm/V, respectively. Angle‐tuned phase‐matched second‐harmonic generation with a conversion efficiency=2×10−3 W−1 has been demonstrated using a 1 mm AANP bulk crystal at 1.064 μm.
