The applications of copper (Cu) and Cu-based nanoparticles, which are based on the earth-abundant and inexpensive copper metal, have generated a great deal of interest in recent years, especially in the field of catalysis. The possible modification of the chemical and physical properties of these nanoparticles using different synthetic strategies and conditions and/or via postsynthetic chemical treatments has been largely responsible for the rapid growth of interest in these nanomaterials and their applications in catalysis. Cu and Cu-Based Nanoparticles: Synthesis and Applications in Catalysis.

Colloidal inorganic nanocrystals stand out as an important class of advanced nanomaterials owing to the flexibility with which their physical-chemical properties can be controlled through size, shape, and compositional engineering in the synthesis stage and the versatility with which they can be implemented into technological applications in fields as diverse as optoelectronics, energy conversion/production, catalysis, and biomedicine. The use of microwave irradiation as a non-classical energy source has become increasingly popular in the preparation of nanocrystals (which generally involves complex and time-consuming processing of molecular precursors in the presence of solvents, ligands and/or surfactants at elevated temperatures). Similar to its now widespread use in organic chemistry, the efficiency of "microwave flash heating" in dramatically reducing overall processing times is one of the main advantages associated with this technique. This Review illustrates microwave-assisted methods that have been developed to synthesize colloidal inorganic nanocrystals and critically evaluates the specific roles that microwave irradiation may play in the formation of these nanomaterials.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of colloidal inorganic nanocrystals.

This study investigates the thermal conductivity and viscosity of copper nanoparticles in ethylene glycol. The nanofluid was prepared by synthesizing copper nanoparticles using a chemical reduction method, with water as the solvent, and then dispersing them in ethylene glycol using a sonicator. Volume loadings of up to 2% were prepared. The measured increase in thermal conductivity was twice the value predicted by the Maxwell effective medium theory. The increase in viscosity was about four times of that predicted by the Einstein law of viscosity. Analytical calculations suggest that this nanofluid would not be beneficial as a coolant in heat exchangers without changing the tube diameter. However, increasing the tube diameter to exploit the increased thermal conductivity of the nanofluid can lead to better thermal performance.

Enhanced thermal conductivity and viscosity of copper nanoparticles in ethylene glycol nanofluid

An interesting shape evolution of Cu2O crystals, that is, from cubes, truncated octahedra, octahedra, and finally to nanospheres was first realized in high yield by reducing the copper−citrate complex solution with glucose. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) techniques were employed to characterize the samples. We elucidate the important parameters (including poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) concentration, reaction time, and reaction temperature) responsible for the shape-controlled synthesis of Cu2O crystals. The possible formation mechanism for the products with various architectures is presented, which is mainly based on the variation of the ratio (R) of the growth rates along the ⟨100⟩ and ⟨111⟩ direction.
