Comparative low-velocity impact behavior of bio-inspired and conventional sandwich composite beams

Cohesive Zone Models (CZM) are widely used for the strength prediction of adhesive joints. Different simulation conditions, such as damage initiation and growth criteria, are available for use in CZM analyses to provide the mixed-mode behaviour. Thus, it is highly relevant to understand in detail their influence on the simulations’ outcome. This work studies the influence of different conditions used in CZM simulations to model a thin adhesive layer in single-lap joints (SLJ) under a tensile loading, for an estimation of their influence on the strength prediction under diverse geometrical and material conditions. Validation with experimental data is considered. Adhesives ranging from brittle to highly ductile and overlap lengths (LO) between 12.5 and 50 mm were considered. Evaluation of different modelling conditions in the cohesive zone analysis of single-lap bonded joints

Present research is conducted in order to assess dynamic stability behavior of a nanocomposite sandwich truncated conical shells (NSTCS). In fact, graphene platelets (GPLs)-reinforced as core layer is encompassed through magnetostrictive layers as face sheets. For modeling the core layer and face sheets mathematically, higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) besides first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) are utilized, respectively. To presume this sandwich structure much more realistic, Kelvin-Voigt model will be used. According to Hamilton's principle with respect to continuity boundary conditions, the governing equations are obtained. Utilizing differential cubature (DC) as well as Bolotin procedures, the governing equations will be solved and the region related to the dynamic instability is achieved. In this novel work, different variables covering various boundary edges, controller, cone's semi vertex angle, damping, feedback gain, proportion of core to face sheets thickness, dispersion kinds of GPLs and its volume percent will be studied. So as to indicate the accuracy of applied theories as well as methods, the results are collated with another paper. It is found that increment of GPLs volume percent leads to rise of excitation frequency.

Progressive failure and experimental study of adhesively bonded composite single-lap joints subjected to axial tensile loads

The performances of low-velocity impact (LVI) and compression after impact (CAI) of honeycomb sandwich composite panels are investigated experimentally and numerically. Honeycomb sandwich panels with different facesheet thicknesses are impacted by drop-weight machine under gradually increasing impact energies. The visible surface damage is recorded and ultrasonic C-scan technology is used to inspect the internal damage of sandwich plates. Numerical simulation is conducted using finite element method, taking into account both facesheet damage and honeycomb damage. The facesheet damage model is based on the continuum damage mechanics and cohesive zone model to simulate intralaminar and interlaminar damage respectively. The honeycomb damage model, which takes into account of both compressive damage and shear damage, is addressed and verified by three-point bending experimental tests.
