A spatial coupling model to study dynamic performance of pantograph-catenary with vehicle-track excitation

Polygonisation is a common nonuniform wear phenomenon occurring in railway vehicle wheels and has a severe impact on the vehicle–track system, ride comfort, and lineside residents. This paper first summarizes periodic defects of the wheels, including wheel polygonisation and wheel corrugation, occurring in railways worldwide. Thereafter, the effects of wheel polygonisation on the wheel–rail interaction, noise and vibration, and fatigue failure of the vehicle and track components are reviewed. Based on the different causes, the formation mechanisms of periodic wheel defects are classified into three categories: (1) initial defects of wheels, (2) natural vibration of the vehicle–track system, and (3) thermoelastic instability. In addition, the simulation methods of wheel polygonisation evolution and countermeasures to mitigate wheel polygonisation are presented. Emphasis is given to the characteristics, effects, causes, and solutions of wheel polygonisation in metro vehicles, locomotives, and high-speed trains in China. Finally, the guidance is provided on further understanding the formation mechanisms, monitoring technology, and maintenance criterion of wheel polygonisation.

Fatigue analysis of the gearbox housing in high-speed trains under wheel polygonization using a multibody dynamics algorithm

The Axle-box bearing (ABB) is a key component in the high-speed train which suffers multiple stochastic excitations in realistic working conditions. The ABB's health status is crucial for the reliable and safe operation of the rolling stock. This paper proposes a novel stochastic vehicle–track coupled model to evaluate the dynamic performance of ABBs in a high-speed train with unsteady wind load and random track irregularities. The nonlinear bearing stiffness and unsmooth nonlinearities of the bearing clearances are properly considered based on the Hertzian contact theory. The von Karman power spectral density is adopted to generate the time-history of the fluctuating wind speed on a moving vehicle. The unsteady wind loads acting on the carbody are derived based on the fluid-induced vibration theory. The empirical PSD of track irregularity is adopted to generate the time-history of track irregularities. The Monte Carlo method is employed to analyse the roller–raceway contact stress with random excitations of unsteady wind and track irregularities. The results indicate that the crosswind causes the partial loading phenomenon of the ABBs. The increase of crosswind speed significantly increases the probability of the contact stress exceeding the safety threshold, which challenges the service safety of the key components inside the train.

The mechanical properties of the transmission system have a great influence on the operation stability of high-speed breaking circuit breakers. This paper designs a 550kV high-speed breaking circuit breaker drive system, establishes a transient dynamics simulation model of the drive system, and compares and analyzes the contact movement characteristics and the force of each component during normal and high-speed opening processes. The research results show that the moving contact displacement and speed simulation results are highly consistent with the experimental test data, and the maximum error does not exceed 5%; the peak stress of each component of the high-speed circuit breaker transmission mechanism is far greater than that of the normal-speed circuit breaker, and the maximum load occurs in the substation The starting time of the brake; the stress peaks of the components of the transmission mechanism of the constant-speed circuit breaker are within the safety margin, and the maximum stress values of the guide rod joint and the crank arm in the transmission mechanism of the highspeed circuit breaker during the entire opening process are respectively 1003.6MPa and 717.44MPa, exceeding the yield strength of the material itself, there is a risk of damage.
