Journal ArticleDOI
Caregiver Burden as People With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Transition into Adolescence and Adulthood in the United Kingdom
Tim Cadman,Hanna Eklund,Deirdre Howley,Hannah Hayward,Hanna Clarke,James Findon,Kiriakos Xenitidis,Declan G. Murphy,Philip Asherson,Karen Glaser +9 more
TL;DR: Adolescence and young adulthood are associated with high levels of caregiver burden in both disorders; in ASD, the level is comparable to that reported by persons caring for individuals with a brain injury.
Journal ArticleDOI
Predicting the diagnosis of autism in adults using the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ) questionnaire
Karen L. Ashwood,Nicola Gillan,Jamie Horder,Hannah Hayward,Emma Woodhouse,Fiona McEwen,James Findon,Hanna Eklund,Debbie Spain,Catherine H. Wilson,Tim Cadman,Susan Jane Young,Vladimira Stoencheva,Clodagh M. Murphy,Dene Robertson,Tony Charman,Patrick Bolton,Karen Glaser,Philip Asherson,Emily Simonoff,Declan G. Murphy +20 more
TL;DR: The AQ's utility for screening referrals was limited and co-morbidity data revealed that generalized anxiety disorder may ‘mimic’ ASD and inflate AQ scores, leading to false positives.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pharmacological treatments prescribed to people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in primary health care
Macey L. Murray,Yingfen Hsia,Yingfen Hsia,Karen Glaser,Emily Simonoff,Declan G. Murphy,Philip Asherson,Hanna Eklund,Ian C. K. Wong,Ian C. K. Wong +9 more
TL;DR: British physicians are more conservative in prescribing practice than American colleagues, however, use of psychostimulants and antipsychotics is much higher in those with ASD than in the general population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Screening for co-occurring conditions in adults with autism spectrum disorder using the strengths and difficulties questionnaire: A pilot study.
James Findon,Tim Cadman,Catherine Stewart,Catherine Stewart,Emma Woodhouse,Hanna Eklund,Hannah Hayward,Daniel De Le Harpe Golden,Daniel De Le Harpe Golden,Eddie Chaplin,Karen Glaser,Emily Simonoff,Emily Simonoff,Declan G. Murphy,Patrick Bolton,Patrick Bolton,Fiona McEwen,Fiona McEwen +17 more
TL;DR: The SDQ shows promise as a simple and efficient way to screen for emotional disorders and hyperactivity in adolescents and adults with ASD that could help reduce the impact of these disorders on individuals and their families.
Journal ArticleDOI
Six-year follow-up study of combined type ADHD from childhood to young adulthood: Predictors of functional impairment and comorbid symptoms.
Tim Cadman,James Findon,Hanna Eklund,Hannah Hayward,Dee Howley,Celeste H. M. Cheung,Jonna Kuntsi,Karen Glaser,Dominic Murphy,Philip Asherson +9 more
TL;DR: Young adults with a childhood diagnosis of ADHD showed increased rates of comorbid mental health problems, which were predicted by current levels of ADHD symptoms, which suggests the importance of the continuing treatment of ADHD throughout the transitional years and into adulthood.
