Fuel cells convert chemical energy directly into electrical energy with high efficiency and low emission of pollutants. However, before fuel-cell technology can gain a significant share of the electrical power market, important issues have to be addressed. These issues include optimal choice of fuel, and the development of alternative materials in the fuel-cell stack. Present fuel-cell prototypes often use materials selected more than 25 years ago. Commercialization aspects, including cost and durability, have revealed inadequacies in some of these materials. Here we summarize recent progress in the search and development of innovative alternative materials.

The increasing world population and the need to improve quality of life for a large percentage of human beings are the driving forces for the search for sustainable energy production systems, alternative to fossil fuel combustion. Among the various types of alternative energy production technologies, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) operating at intermediate temperatures (400–700 °C) show the advantage of possible use both for stationary and mobile energy production. To reach the goal of reducing the SOFC operating temperature, proton-conducting oxides are gaining wide interest as electrolyte materials. This critical review provides a broad overview of the most recent progresses obtained tailoring the properties of proton-conducting oxides for fuel cell applications, analyzing and comparing the different strategies proposed to match high-proton conductivity with good chemical stability (170 references).

Materials challenges toward proton-conducting oxide fuel cells: a critical review

Proton conducting alkaline earth zirconates and titanates for high drain electrochemical applications

The influence of transition metal oxides additives, especially zinc oxide, on the densification and electrical properties of doped barium zirconate have been examined. With the use of zinc oxide as a sintering aid, BaZr_(0.85)V_(0.15)O_(3-δ) was readily sintered to above 93% of theoretical density at 1300 degrees C. Scanning electron microscopic investigations showed Zn accumulation in the intergranular regions. Thermogravimetric analysis of the material under flowing CO_2 showed ZnO-modified barium zirconate to exhibit excellent chemical stability. The conductivity, as measured by A.C. impedance spectroscopy under H_2O saturated nitrogen, was slightly lower than that of unmodified barium zirconate. Electromotive force measurements under fuel cell conditions revealed the total ionic transport number to be ~0.9 at 600 degrees C. The combination of electrical and chemical properties and good sinterabifity render ZnO-modified barium zirconate an excellent candidate for reduced temperature solid oxide fuel cell applications.

Enhanced Sintering of Yttrium‐Doped Barium Zirconate by Addition of ZnO

The impedance of the cubic perovskite BaZr0.9Y0.1O3-δ has been systematically investigated in dry and wet atmospheres at high and low oxygen partial pressures. In the grain interior, conductivity contributions from oxygen ions, electron holes, and protons can be identified. Below 300°C, proton conduction dominates and increases linearly with the frozen-in proton concentration. The proton mobility, with an activation energy of 0.44 ± 0.01 eV is among the highest ever reported for a perovskite-type oxide proton conductor. For dry oxygen atmos-pheres, electron hole conduction dominates with an activation energy of ∼0.9 eV. At temperatures <500°C, the grain-boundary conductivity can be separated and increases upon incorporation of protons. The high electrical conductivity and chemical stability make acceptor-doped barium zirconate a good choice for application as a high-temperature proton conductor.
