Systematic review on physician's knowledge about radiation doses and radiation risks of computed tomography.

Objective To perform a scoping review of the empirical evidence between 1980 and 2009 regarding primary care for adults with spinal cord injury (SCI). Data sources Peer-reviewed journals were searched from 1980 to 2009 using CINAHL, PubMed-MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Social Sciences Abstracts, and Social Work Abstracts. Study selection The key word–driven electronic search identified 42 articles on primary care and SCI. Inclusion criteria narrowed the set to 21 articles that were published in English, that had a sample size of greater than 3, and that offered empirical analysis. Synthesis Approximately 90% of people with SCI identify family physicians as their regular doctors; 63% have SCI specialists. People with long-term SCI develop complex rubrics for navigating their personal health care systems. There is conflicting evidence about the effectiveness of outreach programs for maintaining health and preventing complications following SCI. Regular follow-up by specialized teams and annual comprehensive health examination are supported by the evidence. The research shows a high level of consistency in identifying the most common issues raised by people with SCI in primary care, most of which are related to disability—specifically, secondary complications such as bowel or bladder dysfunction and pain. There is also good evidence that many general health issues require attention in this population, such as bone density problems, depression, and sexual and reproductive health issues. There is level 4 and 5 evidence for unmet health needs among individuals living with SCI in the community. Despite patients with SCI being high users of primary care and health services in general, the evidence suggests that the information needs of these patients in particular are poorly met. Conclusion A robust system of primary care is the best assurance of good health outcomes and reasonable health service use for people with SCI, including annual comprehensive examination, appropriate specialist use, and attention to accessibility and unmet needs.

Primary care of people with spinal cord injury: scoping review.

Background Radiology has many uses other than clinical diagnosis or surgical planning. In museum settings, the use of X-rays is frequent for objects submitted to structural analysis (in that case, they are temporarily moved to hospitals or research centers for this special exam). Purpose For the first time, we wanted to test the feasibility of a CT-scan (computed tomography) in-situ, i.e. in an international museum setting, with the help of a mobile CT-scan device. Results Here we present the results of our study carried out at the quai Branly – Jacques Chirac museum (Paris, France) carried out on nearly 150 extra-european artifacts. Our study shows not only the feasibility of such a large-scale non-invasive CT-scan examination in a museum, but also the growing need for such an examination that opens the way to a new disciplinary field for radiology: CT-scan will become almost indispensable and systematic in museum research centers.

First in-situ use of a mobile CT-scan for museum artefacts: The quai Branly – Jacques Chirac museum experience

Resumen Objetivo Presentar nuestra experiencia en el tratamiento de la retencion urinaria aguda (RUA) en hombres jovenes y de mediana edad, debido a piedra/s en la uretra en un centro de atencion terciaria. Material y metodos Entre julio de 2004 y abril de 2011, se trato a 102 pacientes varones jovenes y de mediana edad (18-40 anos) que presentaban RUA debido a un calculo en la uretra en nuestro centro. El tratamiento inicial consistio en la cateterizacion uretral o cistostomia suprapubica con trocar. El tratamiento definitivo se realizo inmediatamente o despues de un par de dias en funcion de la disponibilidad de la anestesia y/o quirofano. La piedra se fragmento con litotrito mecanico, litotrito neumatico u holmio: laser YAG. Resultados Todos los pacientes quedaron totalmente libres de sus piedra/s siguiendo el procedimiento definitivo. En todos los casos se consiguio miccion espontanea. La infeccion post-operatoria del tracto urinario se observo en 8 pacientes que habian recibido tratamiento endoscopico inmediato. Se observo hematuria leve durante aproximadamente 48 h en 6 pacientes que recibieron cistolitotricia suprapubica. Conclusion El tratamiento endoscopico es actualmente la eleccion para piedra/s en la uretra que puede/n causar RUA en varones jovenes y de mediana edad.

What every physician should know.

Most urinary tract calculi are formed in the upper urinary tract while urethral calculi are uncommon. In young men, lower urinary tract symptoms are often due to infections and are treated with antibiotics, but unusual causes may be overlooked. We present a case of an impacted urethral calculus in an otherwise healthy young male who presented with several months of lower urinary tract symptoms.

Impacted urethral calculus discovered on pelvic ultrasound: a case report.

A patient was initially believed to have a cavernous sinus and sphenoid ridge meningioma and presented to the University of Connecticut Health Center for radiation therapy. Initial radiation planning computerized tomography (CT) revealed the mass to be a lipoma. Conservative management with serial monitoring was the revised plan. This paper describes the rare entity of an intracranial lipoma not located in the midline, and some pitfalls in imaging of intracranial masses.
