Prior to the work of Cable and Hopp (J. Parasit. 40(6): 674.680, 1954) Neoechinorhynchus emydis (L e i d y, 1851) was the only recognized species of Acanthocephala in North American turtles. To date, a total of five species have been described. Of these, two species (Neoechinorbynchus pseudemydis Cable and Hopp, 1954, and N. emyditoides Fisher, 1960) were recovered from six of 12 Louisiana turtles (Pseudemys scripta elegans (Wied)) examined by Fisher (J. Parasit. 46(2): 257-266, 1960). He (1960) also found N. chrysemydis Cable and Hopp, 1954 in Pseudemys scripta subsp. The data pt .sented are results of studies conducted between the spring of 1965 and the summer of 1966. Seventynine turtles (48 female and 31 males) encompassing seven species (47 Pseudemys scripta elegans (Wied), three P. floridana hoyi (Holbrook), eight Chelydra serpentina serpentina (L.), eight Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis Gray, seven Terrapene carolina carolina (L.), five T. c. triunguis (Agassiz) and one Trionyx muticus (LeSueur) collected from Baton Rouge and vicinity were examined. This investigation revealed the presence of three species of Acanthocephala (Neoechinorhynchus pseudemydis, N. emyditoides, and N. chrysemydis) in Louisiana turtles and confirms Fisher’s (1960) work. Of the seven species of turtles examined, only P. s. e!egans (25 16 females and 9 males) and P. floridana hoyi (2 females) were positive with infection. Three of the 25 P. s. e!egans had mixed infection comprising three species of Neoechinorhynchus while seven had two species respectively. Aim: Wetlands are extremely suitable ecosystems to assess the effect of climate change on the density of aquatic insects. This study aimed to assess the effect of seasonality on populations of aquatic insects in the Hawr Al Azim and Shadegan wetlands. Materials and Methods: The insect samplings were conducted at a large area of the Hawr Al Azim and five different sites of the Shadegan wetlands. In total, 18,534 arthropods of different life stages, including 12 orders containing 51 families, were collected and identified from the selected sites of the Shadegan and Hawr Al Azim wetlands. Results: Results showed that the population density of wetland aquatic insects gradually increased as the average daily temperature decreased, positively increased with daily mean relative humidity and precipitation, and decreased with the mean daily evaporation between October and April. Conversely, the population density of wetland aquatic insects gradually decreased with increasing average daily temperature and reduction of the mean relative humidity and precipitation and increasing the average evaporation from April to September. When differences between the average daily and water temperatures reached minimum in April, the population density of wetland aquatic insects reached maximum and turned mainly to families that they have high level of biological indices, indicating that wetlands have clean waters around the spring. While around the autumn conversely, they mostly changed to families that they have low level of biological indices, indicating that wetlands have unclean waters. Conclusion: The present study showed an optimum condition for the growth of insects around spring. Effect of seasonality on the population density of wetland aquatic insects: A case study of the Hawr Al Azim and Shadegan wetlands, Iran

In this study the water quality and organic pollution of Shadegan and Hawr Al Azim wetlands by biological indices using insects during October 2011 to September 2012 were evaluated. The results of the biological monitoring working party index indicated that the abundance of family with medium or lower scores was high. The evaluation results of water quality and organic pollution of these wetlands by Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera, average score per taxon and family biotic indexes indicated that the water quality had a fair to very poor condition assessing probable severe pollution, and likely substantial to severe organic pollution. Also the dominant family index indicated the community was under the influence of environmental stress in these wetlands. Totally assessing outcomes of these biological indices from these wetlands showed that their water quality had a poor condition and they can be used as valuable tools for evaluating the wetland water quality.

Background: Soft ticks play an important role in transmission of bacteria, rikettsia and viral diseases to human. In Iran soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros spread the tick-borne diseases. Objective: Present study was performed to investigate the latest situation of tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) among people and tick infectivity to Borrelia in Sabzevar, an endemic tick-borne relapsing fever region in Iran. Methodology: Ticks were collected in the sampled areas of Sabzevar County by clustered random sampling. The suspected cases of TBRF were passively detected in the study villages. Each of Ornitodoros tholozani was separately crushed and resultant homogenate was inoculated intraperitoneally into a white mouse. Results: A total of 3892 soft ticks were collected and identified. The Argas and Ornitodoros genus were observed 69.6 % and 30.4 %, respectively. Argas persicus, Ornitodoros lahorensis, O. tholozani and A. reflexus species were found 68.0 %, 25.6 %, 4.8% and 1.6 %, respectively. A. persicus (68.0 %) and A. reflexus were found as the highest and the lowest frequent species. Totally 5.2 % of O. tholozani ticks infected with Borrelia persica. Among individuals who suspected to the TBRF, 5 cases infected with B. persica. Conclusions: The vector infectivity rates were 5.2 % which can be an important factor and ability to make proper decide decision for better TBRF management and revision of control measures.
