Development and validation of the job crafting scale

This study among 528 South African employees working in the construction industry examined the dimensionality of burnout and work engagement, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey, the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. On the basis of the literature, we predicted that cynicism and dedication are opposite ends of one underlying attitude dimension (called "identification"), and that exhaustion and vigor are opposite ends of one "energy" dimension. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that while the attitude constructs represent opposite ends of one continuum, the energy constructs do not-although they are highly correlated. These findings are also supported by the pattern of relationships between burnout and work engagement on the one hand, and predictors (i.e., work pressure, autonomy) and outcomes (i.e., organizational commitment, mental health) on the other hand. Implications for the measurement and conceptualization of burnout and work engagement are discussed.

Burnout and work engagement: A thorough investigation of the independency of both constructs.

Based on a conceptual analysis, a two-dimensional self-report questionnaire for assessing workaholism (work addiction) is proposed, including (1) working excessively hard and (2) working compulsively. Using independent explorative and confirmative samples that include employees from The Netherlands (N = 7,594) and Japan ( N = 3,311), a questionnaire is developed and psychometrically evaluated. Results show that both scales (five items each) are internally consistent and that the hypothesized two-factor structure fits to the data of both countries. Furthermore, convergent validity was shown with measures of excess working time and discriminant validity was shown with measures of burnout and work engagement. Workaholics who work excessively hard and compulsively have a high relative risk on burnout and a low relative risk on work engagement. It is concluded that the two-dimensional measure—dubbed the Dutch Workaholism Scale (DUWAS)—is useful tool in future (cross-cultural) research on workaholism.

Abstract
Aim.  This paper is a report of a study conducted to test a model linking new graduate nurses’ perceptions of structural empowerment to their experiences of workplace bullying and burnout in Canadian hospital work settings using Kanter’s work empowerment theory.

Background.  There are numerous anecdotal reports of bullying of new graduates in healthcare settings, which is linked to serious health effects and negative organizational effects.

Methods.  We tested the model using data from the first wave of a 2009 longitudinal study of 415 newly graduated nurses (<3 years of experience) in acute care hospitals across Ontario, Canada. Variables were measured using the Conditions of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire, Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised and Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey.

Results.  The final model fit statistics revealed a reasonably adequate fit (χ² = 14·9, d.f. = 37, IFI = 0·98, CFI = 0·98, RMSEA = 0·09). Structural empowerment was statistically significantly and negatively related to workplace bullying exposure (β = −0·37), which in turn, was statistically significantly related to all three components of burnout (Emotional exhaustion: β = 0·41, Cynicism: β = 0·28, Efficacy: β = −0·17). Emotional exhaustion had a direct effect on cynicism (β = 0·51), which in turn, had a direct effect on efficacy (β = −0·34).

Conclusion.  The results suggest that new graduate nurses’ exposure to bullying may be less when their work environments provide access to empowering work structures, and that these conditions promote nurses’ health and wellbeing.

Postpartum depression is defined as depression starting during pregnancy or within four weeks postpartum. Kumar reported that as many as 10–30% of perinatal women in Western Europe and North America have depression, while O’Hara et al. 4) reported this figure at 13%. Okano et al. 5) showed that the prevalence of postpartum depression in Japan within six months of birth was 9.6%. Suzumiya et al. 6) employed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and showed that 13.9% of mothers within four months postpartum had an EPDS score ≥ 9. It is apparent that a considerable proportion of mothers experience postpartum depression. However, only a small proportion of perinatal women voluntarily visit specialized medical institutions for suspected depression, even when advice to seek medical attention is provided as a result of EPDS-based screening. This suggests that depressed mothers continue looking after their children despite their Abstract Objectives: To explore the psychosocial process in mothers that continue to fulfill their parenting responsibilities despite a depressed mood. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were performed with 11 mothers with suspected depression based on Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (≥ 9) or with strong anxiety about parenting that was detected at the 1-month postpartum examination or the 2 – 4-month newborn house visit. The results of this study suggest that depressed mothers require support to prevent exhaustion from their own mothers, psychological support from their husbands, and support to reduce the sense of loneliness and isolation from their social networks.
