A review of mainly the past two years is undertaken of the industrial applications of pulsed power. Repetitively operated pulsed power generators with a moderate peak power have been developed for industrial applications. These generators are reliable and have low maintenance. Development of the pulsed power generators helps promote industrial applications of pulsed power for such things as food processing, medical treatment, water treatment, exhaust gas treatment, ozone generation, engine ignition, ion implantation and others. Here, industrial applications of pulsed power are classified by application for biological effects, for pulsed streamer discharges in gases, for pulsed discharges in liquid or liquid- mixture, and for material processing.

Industrial Applications of Pulsed Power Technology

Ozone formation by a pulse positive corona discharge generated in the gas phase between a planar high voltage electrode made from reticulated vitreous carbon and a water surface with an immersed ground stainless steel plate electrode was investigated under various operating conditions. The effects of gas flow rate (0.5–3 litre min−1), discharge gap spacing (2.5–10 mm), applied input power (2–45 W) and gas composition (oxygen containing argon or nitrogen) on ozone production were determined. Ozone concentration increased with increasing power input and with increasing discharge gap. The production of ozone was significantly affected by the presence of water vapour formed through vaporization of water at the gas–liquid interface by the action of the gas phase discharge. The highest energy efficiency for ozone production was obtained using high voltage pulses of approximately 150 ns duration in Ar/O2 mixtures with the maximum efficiency (energy yield) of 23 g kW h−1 for 40% argon content.

Generation of ozone by pulsed corona discharge over water surface in hybrid gas–liquid electrical discharge reactor

Analysis of sterilization effect by pulsed dielectric barrier discharge

The decomposition and detoxification of compounds are of great interest in environmental protection and defense-related areas. We report the generation of gaseous excited species by scanning atmospheric radio frequency (rf) plasma and their reactions with two representative organophosphorus nerve agents, paraoxon and parathion, deposited on solid surfaces. The excited gaseous species generated in the Ar and Ar/O2 plasma were identified as atomic oxygen, OH radical, and excited nitrogen molecule from optical emission spectroscopy analysis. The reaction of these species with paraoxon and parathion was monitored with reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy and compared with the decomposition by UV irradiation and UV/ozone treatments. The decomposition products of the atmospheric rf plasma treatment were similar to those of the UV/ozone treatment. The atomic oxygen and excited OH species generated by the plasma appear to be responsible for the oxidation of paraoxon and parathion. The plasma-induced decomposition process was much faster and more efficient than the UV/ozone process. The complete detoxification of paraoxon and parathion upon a short time exposure to the Ar/O2 plasma was confirmed by the Drosophila melanogaster culture test.

Experimental and theoretical study of ozone generation in pulsed positive dielectric barrier discharge

A superposition type ozonizer has been proposed to achieve relatively high ozone concentration and high ozone generation efficiency. A high-pulsed voltage and a 60 Hz ac voltage are simultaneously applied to the same reaction volume in order to improve the ozone generation yield in a wide discharge gap. The ozone concentration of the superimposed discharge consisting of surface discharge and pulsed corona discharge was approximately two times larger than that obtained by an individual discharge. It was observed that the cross-section of the superimposed discharge extended is observed to be approximately 20% at maximum. The emission intensity of the superimposed discharge shows about two times larger than that of the individual discharge at maximum due to the increased electron temperature. The increment of local electric field in the discharge region causes the superposition effect.
