Measuring the Strangeness of Strange Attractors

Acts in what Hutchinson (1965) has called the 'ecological theatre' are played out on various scales of space and time. To understand the drama, we must view it on the appropriate scale. Plant ecologists long ago recognized the importance of sampling scale in their descriptions of the dispersion or distribution of species (e.g. Greig-Smith, 1952). However, many ecologists have behaved as if patterns and the processes that produce them are insensitive to differences in scale and have designed their studies with little explicit attention to scale. Kareiva & Andersen (1988) surveyed nearly 100 field experiments in community ecology and found that half were conducted on plots no larger than 1 m in diameter, despite considerable differences in the sizes and types of organisms studied. Investigators addressing the same questions have often conducted their studies on quite different scales. Not surprisingly, their findings have not always matched, and arguments have ensued. The disagreements among conservation biologists over the optimal design of nature reserves (see Simberloff, 1988) are at least partly due to a failure to appreciate scaling differences among organisms. Controversies about the role of competition in structuring animal communities (Schoener, 1982; Wiens, 1983, 1989) or about the degree of coevolution in communities (Connell, 1980; Roughgarden, 1983) may reflect the

The simulation of radiofrequency ablations (RFA) can predict the achievable coagulation area and thus provide useful information for treatment planning, especially in cases in which the heat distribution can be limited by vascular cooling effects. A strong reliability of the numerical simulation results is essential for clinical use

In this paper, we present a novel experimental procedure for the verification of RFA simulation systems in a lifelike environment without requiring animal tests. RF ablations are performed within isolated, perfused porcine livers, the corresponding configurations are reconstructed and simulated on a computer, and the resulting pathoanatomical coagulations are compared to their simulated counterparts with consideration of vascular cooling effects. We have applied this procedure for an initial verification of an existing RFA simulation system. The results are presented and discussed in this paper.

Analysis of echocardiograms is a valuable tool for assessing myocardial function and diseases. Processing of ultrasound data is challenging due to noise levels and depth-dependent quality of structure edges. We propose to adapt a method based on quadrature filters that is invariant to changes in intensity and has been successfully applied to MRI data earlier. Quadrature-filter-based registration derives the spatial deformation between two images from the local phase shift. Because the local phase is intensity-invariant and requires inhomogeneity, e.g., noise and intensity variations, to properly pick up phase shifts, it is well suited for ultrasound data. A multi-resolution and multi-scale scheme is used to cover different scales of deformations. The type and strength of regularization of the dense deformation field can be specified for each level, allowing for weighting of global and local motion. To speed up the registration, deformation fields are determined slice-wise for three orientations of the original data and subsequently combined into a true 3D deformation field. The method is evaluated with the data and ground truth provided by the Cardiac Motion Analysis Challenge at STACOM 2012.

Quadrature filter based motion analysis for 3d ultrasound sequences

Zusammenfassung. Es werden Methoden zur Visualisierung dynamischer 3D-Volumendaten vorgestellt, die z.B. die Anreicherung eines Kontrastmittels in menschlichen Organen darstellen. Die zugrundeliegenden Daten sind regelmasig strukturierte CTbzw. MRT-Daten. Der zeitliche Verlauf dynamischer Vorgange wird anhand von korrespondierenden Intensitatswerten (unterschiedliche Zeitpunkte; gleiche Bildposition) beurteilt. Dazu werden beschreibende Parameter, wie Integral unter der Kurve oder maximaler Intensitatswert extrahiert. Fur die isolierte Darstellung einzelner Parameter und die kombinierte Darstellung mehrerer Parameter werden Farbabbildungen und Isolinien eingesetzt. Die beschriebenen Visualisierungstechniken werden anhand klinisch relevanter Anwendungen beschrieben, wobei die Quantifizierung der Durchblutung bei Schlaganfallen bzw. bei Durchblutungsstorungen der Beine im Vordergrund stehen.
