Mid-infrared photometry provides a robust technique for identifying active galaxies. While the ultraviolet to mid-infrared (λ 5 μm) continuum of stellar populations is dominated by the composite blackbody curve and peaks at approximately 1.6 μm, the ultraviolet to mid-infrared continuum of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is dominated by a power law. Consequently, with a sufficient wavelength baseline, one can easily distinguish AGNs from stellar populations. Mirroring the tendency of AGNs to be bluer than galaxies in the ultraviolet, where galaxies (and stars) sample the blue, rising portion of stellar spectra, AGNs tend to be redder than galaxies in the mid-infrared, where galaxies sample the red, falling portion of the stellar spectra. We report on Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared colors, derived from the IRAC Shallow Survey, of nearly 10,000 spectroscopically identified sources from the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey. On the basis of this spectroscopic sample, we find that simple mid-infrared color criteria provide remarkably robust separation of active galaxies from normal galaxies and Galactic stars, with over 80% completeness and less than 20% contamination. Considering only broad-lined AGNs, these mid-infrared color criteria identify over 90% of spectroscopically identified quasars and Seyfert 1 galaxies. Applying these color criteria to the full imaging data set, we discuss the implied surface density of AGNs and find evidence for a large population of optically obscured active galaxies.

Mid-Infrared Selection of Active Galaxies

A stellar spectral flux library of wide spectral coverage and an example of its application are presented. The new library consists of 131 flux-calibrated spectra, encompassing all normal spectral types and luminosity classes at solar abundance, and metal-weak and metal-rich F-K dwarf and G-K giant components. Each library spectrum was formed by combining data from several sources overlapping in wavelength coverage. The SIMBAD database, measured colors, and line strengths were used to check that each input component has closely similar stellar type. The library has complete spectral coverage from 1150 to 10620 Afor all components and to 25000 Afor about half of them, mainly later types of solar abundance. Missing spectral coverage in the infrared currently consists of a smooth energy distribution formed from standard colors for the relevant types. The library is designed to permit inclusion of additional digital spectra, particularly of non-solar abundance stars in the infrared, as they become available. The library spectra are each given as Fl versus l, from 1150 to 25000 Ain steps of 5 A ˚. A program to combine the library spectra in the ratios appropriate to a selected isochrone is described and an example of a spectral component signature of a composite population of solar age and metallicity is illustrated. The library spectra and associated tables are available as text files by remote electronic access.

We determine the number counts and z = 0-5 luminosity function for a well-defined, homogeneous sample of quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We conservatively define the most uniform statistical sample possible, consisting of 15,343 quasars within an effective area of 1622 deg2 that was derived from a parent sample of 46,420 spectroscopically confirmed broad-line quasars in the 5282 deg2 of imaging data from SDSS Data Release 3. The sample extends from i = 15 to 19.1 at z 3 and to i = 20.2 for z 3. The number counts and luminosity function agree well with the results of the Two Degree Field QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) at redshifts and luminosities at which the SDSS and 2QZ quasar samples overlap, but the SDSS data probe to much higher redshifts than does the 2QZ sample. The number density of luminous quasars peaks between redshifts 2 and 3, although uncertainties in the selection function in this range do not allow us to determine the peak redshift more precisely. Our best-fit model has a flatter bright-end slope at high redshift than at low redshift. For z < 2.4 the data are best fit by a redshift-independent slope of ? = -3.1 [?(L) ? L?]. Above z = 2.4 the slope flattens with redshift to ? -2.37 at z = 5. This slope change, which is significant at the 5 ? level, must be accounted for in models of the evolution of accretion onto supermassive black holes.

The sloan digital sky survey quasar survey: Quasar luminosity function from data release 3

We present the SEDs of a hard X-ray selected sample containing 136 sources with F_(2-10 keV) > 10^(-14) erg cm^(-2) s^(-1); 132 are AGNs. The sources are detected in a 1 deg^2 area of the XMM-Newton Medium Deep Survey where optical data from the VVDS and CFHTLS and infrared data from the SWIRE survey are available. Based on a SED fitting technique we derive photometric redshifts with σ(1 + z) = 0.11 and 6% of outliers and identify AGN signatures in 83% of the objects. This fraction is higher than derived when a spectroscopic classification is available. The remaining 17^(+9)_(-6)% of AGNs show star-forming galaxy SEDs (SF class). The sources with AGN signatures are divided in two classes, AGN1 (33^(+6)_(-1)%) and AGN2 (50^(+6)_(-11)%). The AGN1 and AGN2 classes include sources whose SEDs are fitted by type 1 and type 2 AGN templates, respectively. On average, AGN1s show soft X-ray spectra, consistent with being unabsorbed, while AGN2s and SFs show hard X-ray spectra, consistent with being absorbed. The analysis of the average SEDs as a function of X-ray luminosity shows a reddening of the infrared SEDs, consistent with a decreasing contribution from the host galaxy at higher luminosities. The AGNs in the SF classes are likely obscured in the mid-infrared, as suggested by their low L_(3-20 μm)/L^(corr)_(0.5-10 keV) ratios. We confirm the previously found correlation for AGNs between the radio luminosity and the X-ray and the mid-infrared luminosities. The X-ray-radio correlation can be used to identify heavily absorbed AGNs. However, the estimated radio fluxes for the missing AGN population responsible for the bulk of the background at E > 10 keV are too faint to be detected even in the deepest current radio surveys.

Spectral Energy Distributions of Hard X-Ray Selected Active Galactic Nuclei in the XMM-Newton Medium Deep Survey

Selection of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the infrared facilitates the discovery of AGNs whose optical emission is extinguished by dust. In this paper, we use the Spitzer Space Telescope First Look Survey (FLS) to assess the fraction of AGNs with mid-infrared (MIR) luminosities that are comparable to quasars and that are missed in optical quasar surveys because of dust obscuration. We begin by using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database to identify 54 quasars within the 4 deg^2 extragalactic FLS. These quasars occupy a distinct region in MIR color space by virtue of their strong, red continua. This has allowed us to define an MIR color criterion for selecting AGN candidates. About 2000 FLS objects have colors that are consistent with them being AGNs, but most are much fainter in the MIR than the SDSS quasars, which typically have 8 μm flux densities S_(8.0) ~ 1 mJy. We have investigated the properties of 43 objects with S_(8.0) ≥ 1 mJy that satisfy our AGN color selection. This sample should contain both unobscured quasars as well as AGNs that are absent from the SDSS survey because of extinction in the optical. After removing 16 known quasars, three probable normal quasars, and eight spurious or confused objects from the initial sample of 43, we are left with 16 objects that are likely to be obscured quasars or luminous Seyfert 2 galaxies. This suggests that the numbers of obscured and unobscured AGNs are similar in samples selected in the MIR at S_(8.0) ~ 1 mJy.

Obscured and unobscured active galactic nuclei in the Spitzer Space Telescope First Look Survey

Distance estimates based on low-resolution spectroscopy and Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) J magnitudes are presented for a large sample of 322 nearby candidates from Luyten's NLTT catalogue. Mainly relatively bright (typically ) and red high proper motion stars have been selected according to their 2MASS magnitudes and optical-to-infrared colours (). Some LHS stars previously lacking spectroscopy have also been included. We have classified the majority of the objects as early-M dwarfs (M 2-M 5). More than 70% of our targets turned out to lie within the 25 pc horizon of the catalogue of nearby stars, with 50 objects placed within 15 pc and 8 objects being closer than 10 pc. Three objects in the 10 pc sample have no previously published spectral type: LP 876-10 (M 4), LP 870-65 (M 4.5), and LP 869-26 (M 5). A large fraction of the objects in our sample (57%) have independent distance estimates, mainly by the recent efforts of Reid and collaborators. Our distance determinations are generally in good agreement with theirs. 11 rather distant ( pc) objects have also been identified, including a probable halo, but relatively hot ( K) white dwarf (LHS 1200) and 10 red dwarfs with extremely large tangential velocities ( km s-1 ). Altogether, there are 11 red dwarfs (including one within 70 pc) with tangential velocities larger than about 250 km s-1 . All these objects are suspected to be in fact subdwarfs, if so, their distances would be only about half of our original estimates. The three most extreme objects in that respect are the K and early M dwarfs LP 323-168, LHS 5343 and LP 552-21 with corrected distances between 180 pc and 400 pc and resulting tangential velocities still larger than about 400 km s-1 .

Search for nearby stars among proper motion stars selected by optical-to-infrared photometry - III. Spectroscopic distances of 322 NLTT stars

Context. Large spectroscopic surveys have discovered very peculiar and hitherto unknown types of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Such rare objects may hold clues to the accretion history of the supermassive black holes at the centres of galaxies. Aims. We aim to create a sizeable sample of unusual quasars from the unprecedented spectroscopic database of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Methods. We exploit the spectral archive of the SDSS Data Release 7 to select unusual quasar spectra. The selection method is based on a combination of the power of self-organising maps and the visual inspection of a huge number of spectra. Self-organising maps were applied to nearly 105 spectra classified as quasars at redshifts from z  = 0.6 to 4.3 by the SDSS pipeline. Particular attention was paid to minimise possible contamination by rare peculiar stellar spectral types. All selected quasar spectra were individually studied to determine the object type and the redshift. Results. We present a catalogue of 1005 quasars with unusual spectra. These spectra are dominated by either broad absorption lines (BALs; 42%), unusual red continua (27%), weak emission lines (18%), or conspicuously strong optical and/or UV iron emission (11%). This large sample provides a useful resource for both studying properties and relations of/between different types of unusual quasars and selecting particularly interesting objects, even though the compilation is not aimed at completeness in a quantifiable sense. The spectra are grouped into six types for which composite spectra are constructed and mean properties are computed. Remarkably, all these types turn out to be on average more luminous than comparison samples of normal quasars after a statistical correction is made for intrinsic reddening (E (B  − V ) ≈ 0 to 0.4 for SMC-like extinction). Both the unusual BAL quasars and the strong iron emitters have significantly lower radio luminosities than normal quasars. We also confirm that strong BALs avoid the most radio-luminous quasars. For 32 particularly interesting objects, individual spectra are presented. Among these objects are quasars with many narrow BAL troughs and one quasar where the continuum is strongly suppressed by overlapping BAL troughs across nearly the whole SDSS spectrum. Finally, we create a sample of quasars similar to the two “mysterious” objects discovered by Hall et al. (2002, ApJS, 141, 267) and briefly discuss the quasar properties and possible explanations of their highly peculiar spectra.

Unusual quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey selected by means of Kohonen self-organising maps

The SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys provide a complete coverage of the Southern sky in three passbands (photographic B_J, R and I) and at different epochs (Hambly et al. 2001a,b,c). These data are the basis for a new high proper motion survey which aims at finding extremely red nearby dwarf stars and brown dwarfs. One of the first candidates, which is relatively bright (I=16) but very red (R-I=2.8, B_J-R=3.6), was detected in the equatorial zone by its large proper motion of 0.56 arcsec/yr. Spectroscopic follow-up observations with the 2.2m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory classified this object as L2 dwarf very similar to the first free-floating L dwarf Kelu1 also discovered in a proper motion survey by Ruiz et al. (1997). If we assume SSSPMJ0829-1309 to have the same luminosity as Kelu1, we get a distance estimate for the new L dwarf of about 12pc since it is about one magnitude brighter than Kelu1 in the SSS I and R bands. This makes SSSPMJ0829-1309 one of the nearest objects of its class, well suited for detailed investigations. We present a brief overview of all known nearby (d<20pc) southern L dwarfs and give first proper motion values for DENIS-PJ0255-47 and SDSSpJ1326-00 and an improved proper motion for LHS102B.

SSSPMJ0829-1309: A new nearby L dwarf detected in SuperCOSMOS Sky Surveys

We present the discovery of a previously unknown very nearby star - LHS 2090 at a distance of only d=6 pc. In order to find nearby (i.e. d $ 0.18 arcsec/yr) from the NLTT catalogue (Luyten \cite{luyten7980}) in optical Digitized Sky Survey data for two different epochs and in the 2MASS data base. Only proper motion stars with large $R-K_s$ colour index and with relatively bright infrared magnitudes ($K_s<10$) were selected for follow-up spectroscopy. The low-resolution spectrum of LHS 2090 and its large proper motion (0.79 arcsec/yr) classify this star as an M6.5 dwarf. The resulting spectroscopic distance estimate from comparing the infrared $JHK_s$ magnitudes of LHS 2090 with absolute magnitudes of M6.5 dwarfs is $6.0\pm1.1$ pc assuming an uncertainty in absolute magnitude of $\pm$0.4 mag.
