Journal ArticleDOI

Combined use of environmental data and biomarkers in fish (Liza aurata) inhabiting a eutrophic and metal-contaminated coastal system - Gills reflect environmental contamination.

TL;DR: Gills can be considered as an important route of entry for contaminants and were demonstrated to reflect water contamination and are therefore useful in the context of environmental assessment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Factors structuring temporal and spatial dynamics of macrobenthic communities in a eutrophic coastal lagoon (Óbidos lagoon, Portugal).

TL;DR: BIOENV analysis indicated total phosphorus, biomass of Ulva, metals and organic carbon and nitrogen as being significantly influencing benthic patterns, and discrepancies in ecological behaviours of some taxa were detected in the present study stressing the need for additional studies on the relationships between macrobenthic communities and environmental variables.
Journal ArticleDOI

Record of diagenesis of rare earth elements and other metals in a transitional sedimentary environment

TL;DR: The vertical distribution of trace and rare earth elements (REE) was studied in a sediment core from the Vigo Ria (NW Iberian Peninsula) where sedimentation patterns have changed during the last century as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biochemical responses of the shore crab (Carcinus maenas) in a eutrophic and metal-contaminated coastal system (Obidos lagoon, Portugal).

TL;DR: Monitoring a eutrophic and metal-contaminated coastal system was monitored combining water/sediment quality parameters and Carcinus maenas biomarkers and responses were not directly attributed to metals in hepatopancreas, however, higher metals and nutrients levels registered in Barrosa water were associated with the observed oxidative stress responses by PCA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Spatial and seasonal variation of water quality in an impacted coastal lagoon (Óbidos Lagoon, Portugal)

TL;DR: The results emphasize the spatial heterogeneity of water quality in Óbidos lagoon, its seasonal variability, and the importance of recognising these distributions before defining homogenous water body on the scope of Water Framework Directive.
