The survey begins with an overview of the foundations dating back to the pioneering work of Shannon and Wyner on information-theoretic security. We then describe the evolution of secure transmission strategies from point-to-point channels to multiple-antenna systems, followed by generalizations to multiuser broadcast, multiple-access, interference, and relay networks. Secret-key generation and establishment protocols based on physical layer mechanisms are subsequently covered. Approaches for secrecy based on channel coding design are then examined, along with a description of inter-disciplinary approaches based on game theory and stochastic geometry. The associated problem of physical layer message authentication is also briefly introduced. The survey concludes with observations on potential research directions in this area.

Principles of Physical Layer Security in Multiuser Wireless Networks: A Survey

Filtering and smoothing methods are used to produce an accurate estimate of the state of a time-varying system based on multiple observational inputs (data). Interest in these methods has exploded in recent years, with numerous applications emerging in fields such as navigation, aerospace engineering, telecommunications, and medicine. This compact, informal introduction for graduate students and advanced undergraduates presents the current state-of-the-art filtering and smoothing methods in a unified Bayesian framework. Readers learn what non-linear Kalman filters and particle filters are, how they are related, and their relative advantages and disadvantages. They also discover how state-of-the-art Bayesian parameter estimation methods can be combined with state-of-the-art filtering and smoothing algorithms. The book’s practical and algorithmic approach assumes only modest mathematical prerequisites. Examples include MATLAB computations, and the numerous end-of-chapter exercises include computational assignments. In this paper, we present the background and motivation of communication infrastructures in smart grid systems. We also summarize major requirements that smart grid communications must meet. From the experience of several industrial trials on smart grid with communication infrastructures, we expect that the traditional carbon fuel based power plants can cooperate with emerging distributed renewable energy such as wind, solar, etc, to reduce the carbon fuel consumption and consequent green house gas such as carbon dioxide emission. The consumers can minimize their expense on energy by adjusting their intelligent home appliance operations to avoid the peak hours and utilize the renewable energy instead. We further explore the challenges for a communication infrastructure as the part of a complex smart grid system. Since a smart grid system might have over millions of consumers and devices, the demand of its reliability and security is extremely critical. Through a communication infrastructure, a smart grid can improve power reliability and quality to eliminate electricity blackout. Security is a challenging issue since the on-going smart grid systems facing increasing vulnerabilities as more and more automation, remote monitoring/controlling and supervision entities are interconnected.

A Survey on Smart Grid CommunicationInfrastructures: Motivations, Requirements andChallenges

The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears.

Towards 6G wireless communication networks: vision, enabling technologies, and new paradigm shifts

—Ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) constitutes a key service class of the ﬁfth generation and beyond cellular networks. Notably, designing and supporting URLLC poses a herculean task due to the fundamental need of identifying and accurately characterizing the underlying statistical models in which the system operates, e.g., interference statistics, channel conditions, and the behavior of protocols. In general, multi-layer end-to-end approaches considering all the potential delay and error sources and proper statistical tools and methodologies are inevitably required for providing strong reliability and latency guarantees. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge in the latter aspect by providing a tutorial on several statistical tools and methodologies that are useful for designing and analyzing URLLC systems. Speciﬁcally, we overview the frameworks related to i) reliability theory, ii) short packet communications, iii) inequalities, distribution bounds, tail approximations, and risk-assessment tools, iv) rare events simulation, v) large-scale tools such as stochastic geometry, clustering, compressed sensing, and mean-ﬁeld games, vi) queuing theory and information freshness, and vii) machine learning. Throughout the paper, we brieﬂy review the state- of-the-art works using the addressed tools and methodologies, and their link to URLLC systems. Moreover, we discuss novel application examples focused on physical and medium access control layers. Finally, key research challenges and directions are highlighted to elucidate how URLLC analysis/design research may evolve in the coming years.

Statistical Tools and Methodologies for URLLC - A Tutorial

In this paper, we study the trade-off between reliability and latency in machine type communication (MTC), which consists of single transmitter and receiver in the presence of Rayleigh fading channel. We assume that the transmitter does not know the channel conditions, therefore it would be transmitting information over a fixed rate. The fixed rate transmission is modeled as a two-state continuous-time Markov process, where the optimum transmission rate is obtained. Moreover, we conduct a performance analysis for different arrival traffic originated from MTC device via effective rate transmission. We consider that the arrival traffic is modeled as a Markovian process namely Discrete-Time Markov process, Fluid Markov process, and Markov Modulated Poisson process, under delay violation constraints. Using effective bandwidth and effective capacity theories, we evaluate the trade-off between reliability-latency and identify QoS (Quality of Service) requirement, and derive lower and upper bounds for the effective capacity subject to channel memory decay rate limits.

This paper analysis the energy efficiency of an unlicensed wireless network in which retransmission is possible if the transmitted message is decoded in outage. A wireless sensor network is considered in which the sensor nodes are unlicensed users of a wireless network which transmit its data in the uplink channel used by the licensed users. Poisson point process is used to model the distributions of the nodes and the interference caused by the licensed users for the sensor nodes. After finding the optimal throughput in the presence of retransmissions, we focus on analyzing the total power consumption and energy efficiency of the network and how retransmissions, network density and outage threshold affects the energy efficiency of the network.

In this paper, we derive closed-form exact expressions for the main statistics of the ratio of squared alpha-mu random variables, which are of interest in many scenarios for future wireless networks where generalized distributions are more suitable to fit with field data. Importantly, different from previous proposals, our expressions are general in the sense that are valid for non constrained arbitrary values of the parameters of the alpha-mu distribution. Thus, the probability density function, cumulative distribution function, moment generating function, and higher order moments are given in terms of both (i) theFox H-function for which we provide a portable and efficient Wolfram Mathematica code and (ii) easily computable series expansions. Our expressions can be used straightforwardly in the performance analysis of a number of wireless communication systems, including either interference-limited scenarios, spectrum sharing, full-duplex or physical-layer security networks, for which we present the application of the proposed framework. Moreover, closed-form expressions for some classical distributions, derived as special cases from the alpha-mu distribution, are provided as byproducts. The validity of the proposed expressions is confirmed via Monte Carlo simulations.
