The smart grid is conceived of as an electric grid that can deliver electricity in a controlled, smart way from points of generation to active consumers. Demand response (DR), by promoting the interaction and responsiveness of the customers, may offer a broad range of potential benefits on system operation and expansion and on market efficiency. Moreover, by improving the reliability of the power system and, in the long term, lowering peak demand, DR reduces overall plant and capital cost investments and postpones the need for network upgrades. In this paper a survey of DR potentials and benefits in smart grids is presented. Innovative enabling technologies and systems, such as smart meters, energy controllers, communication systems, decisive to facilitate the coordination of efficiency and DR in a smart grid, are described and discussed with reference to real industrial case studies and research projects.

With the explosive growth of mobile data demand, the fifth generation (5G) mobile network would exploit the enormous amount of spectrum in the millimeter wave (mmWave) bands to greatly increase communication capacity. There are fundamental differences between mmWave communications and existing other communication systems, in terms of high propagation loss, directivity, and sensitivity to blockage. These characteristics of mmWave communications pose several challenges to fully exploit the potential of mmWave communications, including integrated circuits and system design, interference management, spatial reuse, anti-blockage, and dynamics control. To address these challenges, we carry out a survey of existing solutions and standards, and propose design guidelines in architectures and protocols for mmWave communications. We also discuss the potential applications of mmWave communications in the 5G network, including the small cell access, the cellular access, and the wireless backhaul. Finally, we discuss relevant open research issues including the new physical layer technology, software-defined network architecture, measurements of network state information, efficient control mechanisms, and heterogeneous networking, which should be further investigated to facilitate the deployment of mmWave communication systems in the future 5G networks.

A survey of millimeter wave communications (mmWave) for 5G: opportunities and challenges

Cognitive radio (CR) is the enabling technology for supporting dynamic spectrum access: the policy that addresses the spectrum scarcity problem that is encountered in many countries. Thus, CR is widely regarded as one of the most promising technologies for future wireless communications. To make radios and wireless networks truly cognitive, however, is by no means a simple task, and it requires collaborative effort from various research communities, including communications theory, networking engineering, signal processing, game theory, software-hardware joint design, and reconfigurable antenna and radio-frequency design. In this paper, we provide a systematic overview on CR networking and communications by looking at the key functions of the physical (PHY), medium access control (MAC), and network layers involved in a CR design and how these layers are crossly related. In particular, for the PHY layer, we will address signal processing techniques for spectrum sensing, cooperative spectrum sensing, and transceiver design for cognitive spectrum access. For the MAC layer, we review sensing scheduling schemes, sensing-access tradeoff design, spectrum-aware access MAC, and CR MAC protocols. In the network layer, cognitive radio network (CRN) tomography, spectrum-aware routing, and quality-of-service (QoS) control will be addressed. Emerging CRNs that are actively developed by various standardization committees and spectrum-sharing economics will also be reviewed. Finally, we point out several open questions and challenges that are related to the CRN design.

Cognitive radio networking and communications: an overview

Millimeter Wave Communications for Future Mobile Networks

We investigate a planar monopole antenna fed from the side of a perpendicular ground plate and show that impedance matching is attainable at a fractional bandwidth of 150% by adjusting the relative position of the ground plate to the monopole.

Cognitive radio based wireless systems using TV white space have been attracting a lot of attentions. In the cognitive radio systems using TV white space, it is desirable to secure a control channel to exchange the information on the availability of white space and the frequency resource such as the frequency channel and the bandwidth. In addition, it is necessary to secure minimum frequency resource for communications if TV white space is unavailable even though TV white space is used on an opportunistic basis. In order to solve these problems, this paper proposes a guard band aggregation scheme, which aggregates the multiple guard bands between digital TV signals and uses them for a control channel and/or a communication channel. This paper shows the performance evaluation results of the digital TV signals when the guard band is used by the proposed scheme. Furthermore, it discusses the permissible transmitting power and occupied bandwidth to avoid the performance degradation of the digital TV signals.

A guard band aggregation scheme for cognitive radio using TV white space

The present invention uses a plurality of consecutive frequency bands as a broadband and improves the use efficiency thereof. An effective-frequency-band information list is stored and held such that available frequency bands are classified into frequency band groups, each of which is a series of consecutive frequency bands, and such that the number of frequency bands included in each of the frequency band groups is assigned to the respective frequency band group as a frequency band number width. The number of frequency bands required for communication is defined as a required number of frequency bands. One of the frequency band groups indicated in the list and having a frequency band number width that matches the required number of frequency bands is selected as a first type of available frequency band group. If no such frequency band group is indicated in the list, one of the frequency band groups having frequency band number widths that are the next closest to the required number of frequency bands is selected as a frequency band group containing available frequency bands. Among the frequency bands belonging to said frequency band group containing available frequency bands, a series of consecutive frequency bands corresponding to the required number of frequency bands are selected as a second type of available frequency band group. Then, the first or second type of available frequency band group is used.

An exact expression of the average error rate is developed for a band-limited binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) system in the presence of adjacent channel interference (ACI) considering a Nakagami fading channel. The system employs a root-raised cosine (RRC) filter both in the transmitter and receiver sides and a transmitter power amplifier (PA) that may have nonlinear input/output characteristics. These practical considerations are accurately taken into account. By utilizing the characteristic function (CF) method of error-rate analysis, we interestingly blend the concepts of time and frequency domains and develop an error-rate expression that is simple and general for several system parameters, including adjacent channel separation, RRC filter roll-off factor, and PA output back-off (OBO). Hence, the error rate in the presence of cochannel interference (CCI) is obtained as a special case. The developed results for a single-branch receiver are then extended for diversity receivers, and several interesting observations are made.
