This paper surveys the control theoretic literature on decentralized and hierarchical control, and methods of analysis of large scale systems.

Survey of decentralized control methods for large scale systems

In recent years, sustainable development strategy for enterprises has become an important issue around the globe. There are four management systems (i.e. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and SA 8000) that can help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to create sustainable competitive advantages. In view of the fact that the shortage of resources - time, personnel, as well as money - rules most SMEs, this paper proposes a novel hybrid model for selecting optimal management systems under resource constraints, and illustrates the practical application of such a model through an example. This model first applies the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) approach to construct interrelations among criteria that organizations require. The second step is to obtain the criterion weights through ANP. Lastly, ANP is integrated with a zero-one goal programming (ZOGP) model to obtain optimal alternatives with desired organizational benefits by fully utilizing limited resources. The purpose of this study is to present an integrated approach that could cope with the interdependencies among various criteria and deal with the constraints on resources, and to demonstrate how to select management systems for phased implementation. Therefore, the main contribution of this paper is to enhance the capacity of SMEs to effectively address the challenge of sustainable development through a novel model of prioritizing available management systems.

Selecting management systems for sustainable development in SMEs: A novel hybrid model based on DEMATEL, ANP, and ZOGP

Whenever intrepid researchers venture into new terrain, they find that they require knowledge outside of their formal training. This paper reviews bodies of knowledge for operations management (OM) researchers interested in the new area of Behavioral Operations. We highlight theoretical constructs and empirical phenomena from cognitive psychology, social psychology, group dynamics, and system dynamics. We also provide a guide for where to go to learn more about each body of knowledge. Our overall goal is to lower the startup costs for new researchers in Behavioral Operations.

Constructing a strategy map for banking institutions with key performance indicators of the balanced scorecard.

A discrete dynamic model of multidimensional high-order difference equations is described for the dynamics of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved oxygen (DO) in a multiple-reach river system. The high-order difference equations represent the distributed transport delays between the adjacent reaches in the river to allow for the effects of dispersion of BOD and DO. A hierarchical optimization technique, which is based on duality and decomposition, is applied to the high-order discrete dynamic model having state and control constraints for minimizing the deviation of water quality from the desired level. It is shown that the distributed delay model is the most realistic one by comparing the responses for no delay, pure delay, and distributed delay models. By solving a 4-reach problem it is also shown that the hierarchical optimization technique is a powerful tool for optimizing fairly large dimensional discrete dynamic systems having distributed transport delays and state and control constraints.

A Discrete Dynamic Model with Distributed Transport Delays and Its Hierarchical Optimization for Preserving Stream Quality

In this paper we try to extract various uneasy factors in our life. Then, we try to construct structural models among these factors using Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL). For the purpose of analyzing priority among these factors we revised the DEMATEL and found effective factors to be resolved in order to realize future safe, secure and reliable (SSR) society. Structural modeling and systems analysis of uneasy factors for realizing safe, secure and reliable society

Behavioral models for complex decision analysis

The present paper discusses the application of a new genetic algorithm (GA) featuring heterogeneous population to solve multiobjective flowshop scheduling problems. Many GAs have been developed to solve multiobjective scheduling problems, but they used a non-heterogeneous population approach, which could lead to premature convergence and local Pareto-optimum solutions. Our experiments with a 20-job and 20-machine benchmark problem given in Taillard (1993) show that the heterogeneous multiobjective genetic algorithm (hMGA) developed in this research outperforms NSGA-II (Deb 2001) one of the widely used algorithms with non-heterogeneous population. Moreover, in this paper we also present the comparison of hMGA with another meta-heuristic method, i.e. multi-objective simulated annealing (MOSA), proposed by Varadharajan and Rajendran (2005). This research concludes that hMGA developed in this work is promising as it can produce a new set of Pareto-optimum solutions that have not been found by MOSA before.
