This paper proposes a novel sliding-mode observer (SMO) to achieve the sensorless control of permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). An observer is built according to the back electromotive force (EMF) model after the back EMF equivalent signal is obtained. In this way, not only are low-pass filter and phase compensation module eliminated, but also estimation accuracy is improved. Numerical simulations and experiments with an 11-kW low-speed PMSM are carried out. The results demonstrate that the novel SMO can effectively estimate rotor position and speed and achieve good static and dynamic performance.

New Sliding-Mode Observer for Position Sensorless Control of Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor

This paper investigates the problem of automatic speed tracking control of an electric vehicle (EV) that is powered by a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). A reconfiguration scheme, based on higher order sliding mode (HOSM) observer, is proposed in the event of sensor faults/failures to maintain a good control performance. The corresponding controlled motor output torque drives EVs to track the desired vehicle reference speed for providing uninterrupted vehicle safe operation. The effectiveness of the overall sensor fault-tolerant speed tracking control is highlighted when an EV is subjected to disturbances like aerodynamic load force and road roughness using high-fidelity software package CarSim. Experiments with a 26-W, three-phase PMSM are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed fault-detection scheme.

A Robust Observer-Based Sensor Fault-Tolerant Control for PMSM in Electric Vehicles

A position sensorless control strategy of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive based on a digital signal processor (DSP) is proposed. To achieve sensorless wide-speed-range operation, a hybrid position estimation strategy combining the high frequency (HF) signal injection method with the electromotive force (EMF)-based method is presented. At low-speed range, an HF voltage signal is injected, and a rotor position observer is designed to improve the robustness to the load disturbance. At middle- and high-speed ranges, a sliding-mode observer based on the extended EMF of IPMSM is designed for sensorless operation. Moreover, during the switch-over area, the two position estimation methods are both enabled for the sensorless control. A software phase-locked loop and a dead-time compensation strategy are adopted to improve the position estimation accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the control strategy with a sensorless IPMSM drive based on a DSP.

DSP-Based Control of Sensorless IPMSM Drives for Wide-Speed-Range Operation

Owing to the competitive advantages of cost reduction, system downsizing, and reliability enhancement, position sensorless control methods for permanent magnet synchronous machine drives have drawn increasing attention from academia to industrial applications. In this article, a survey of the major sensorless control techniques for a wide speed range from low to high speeds is presented. The different high frequency signal injection schemes, fundamental pulsewidth modulation excitation methods, and model-based sensorless control are displayed and compared, which is able to facilitate the sensorless control implementation.

FPGA-Based Sensorless PMSM Speed Control Using Reduced-Order Extended Kalman Filters

This paper proposes a sensorless speed control strategy for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) based on a new sliding-mode observer (SMO), which substitutes a sigmoid function for the signum function with a variable boundary layer. In order to apply a sensorless PMSM control which is robust against parameter fluctuations and disturbances, a high-speed SMO is proposed, which estimates the rotor position and the angular velocity from the back EMF. In the conventional SMO, a low-pass filter and an additional position compensation of the rotor are used to reduce the chattering problem that is commonly found in the SMO using the signum function. In order to overcome the time delay caused by the low-pass filter, in this research, a sigmoid function is used for the switching function instead of the signum function. Also, the variation in the stator resistance is estimated to improve the steady-state performance of the SMO. The stability of the proposed SMO was verified using the Lyapunov second method to determine the observer gain. The validity of the proposed high-speed PMSM sensorless velocity control has been demonstrated with simulations and real experiments.

PMSM Sensorless Speed Control Using a High Speed Sliding Mode Observer

This paper proposes an adaptive sliding mode observer (SMO), which adds the estimation function of the stator resistance to a new sliding mode observer for the robust sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with variable parameters. To reduce the chattering problem commonly found in the conventional sliding mode observer where the low-pass filter and additional position compensation of the rotor are used, the sigmoid function is used for the control of a switching function in this research. With the estimation of the stator resistance, the proposed observer can improve the control performance by reducing the estimation error of the motor's speed. Note that the stator resistance is varying with the ambient temperature and becomes an error source for the sensorless control of PMSM. The new sliding mode observer has better efficiency than the conventional adaptive sliding mode observer by reducing the time consuming integral calculations. The stability of the proposed adaptive sliding mode observer is verified by the Lyapunov function in determining the observer gains, and the effectiveness of the observer is demonstrated by simulations and experiments.
