Influence of porosity on compressive and tensile strength of cement mortar

This review examines the detailed chemical insights that have been generated through 150 years of work worldwide on magnesium-based inorganic cements, with a focus on both scientific and patent literature. Magnesium carbonate, phosphate, silicate-hydrate, and oxysalt (both chloride and sulfate) cements are all assessed. Many such cements are ideally suited to specialist applications in precast construction, road repair, and other fields including nuclear waste immobilization. The majority of MgO-based cements are more costly to produce than Portland cement because of the relatively high cost of reactive sources of MgO and do not have a sufficiently high internal pH to passivate mild steel reinforcing bars. This precludes MgO-based cements from providing a large-scale replacement for Portland cement in the production of steel-reinforced concretes for civil engineering applications, despite the potential for CO2 emissions reductions offered by some such systems. Nonetheless, in uses that do not require steel reinforcement, and in locations where the MgO can be sourced at a competitive price, a detailed understanding of these systems enables their specification, design, and selection as advanced engineering materials with a strongly defined chemical basis.

Formation of magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) cement pastes using sodium hexametaphosphate

Cement is the ubiquitous material upon which modern civilisation is built, providing long-term strength, impermeability and durability for housing and infrastructure. The fundamental chemical interactions which control the structure and performance of cements have been the subject of intense research for decades, but the complex, crystallographically disordered nature of the key phases which form in hardened cements has raised difficulty in obtaining detailed information about local structure, reaction mechanisms and kinetics. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SS NMR)spectroscopy can resolve key atomic structural details within these materials and has emerged as a crucial tool in characterising cement structure and properties. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the application of multinuclear SS NMR spectroscopy to understand composition–structure–property relationships in cements. This includes anhydrous and hydrated phases in Portland cement, calcium aluminate cements, calcium sulfoaluminate cements, magnesia-based cements, alkali-activated and geopolymer cements and synthetic model systems. Advanced and multidimensional experiments probe 1 H, 13 C, 17 O, 19 F, 23 Na, 25 Mg, 27 Al, 29 Si, 31 P, 33 S, 35 Cl, 39 K and 43 Ca nuclei, to study atomic structure, phase evolution, nanostructural development, reaction mechanisms and kinetics. Thus, the mechanisms controlling the physical properties of cements can now be resolved and understood at an unprecedented and essential level of detail.

Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of cements

ASTM C1567 [1] is a commonly used accelerated test method to determine the required dosage of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to mitigate alkali–silica reaction (ASR) in mixtures containing reactive siliceous aggregates. Past research suggested that fly ash and other SCMs inhibit ASR, primarily through alkali dilution and binding. In ASTM C1567, however, the alkalinity of the pore solution is largely influenced by the penetration of NaOH from the external soak solution; and this could erase the beneficial effects of alkali dilution and binding. To better understand why fly ash inhibits ASR in this test, the present study performs a quantitative evaluation of six potential ASR mitigation mechanisms: (1) alkali dilution, (2) alkali binding, (3) mass transport reduction, (4) increasing tensile strength, (5) altering ASR gel, and (6) reducing aggregate dissolution rate. The results suggest that (2), (3), (4), and (6) are the primary mitigation mechanisms, while (1) and (5) show a negligible impact.

How does fly ash mitigate alkali–silica reaction (ASR) in accelerated mortar bar test (ASTM C1567)?

A study on the relationship between porosity of the cement paste with mineral additives and compressive strength of mortar based on this paste

The paste was prepared by mixing MgO, microsilica and H2O in the presence of water reducer at different reaction ratios and temperatures, and characterized by XRD, DTA, TGA, IR, and solid-state 29Si NMR. The experimental results showed that, besides Mg(OH)2, magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) was formed at a low temperature such as 25 and 50 °C. At a high temperature of 100 °C, Mg(OH)2 can be further transformed into M-S-H completely, for instance, within ca. 1 month in an excess of microsilica. The average composition and structure of M-S-H was mainly related to the reaction mixture and curing temperature and was discussed in detail.
